Noobe Roof cleaing

I have my battery and delavan inside this box now...just another option in place of the orange boat box. Plus I feel more comfortable w/the added air circulation of the bigger box. 5/8 here

Yippy...........hose wars..........again.
Naw, just a bunch of roof guys talking shop :D
We all use what we like, just like you do :D
I am cleaning a roof in the first pic, second is Mallard, third pic is one of my expolyees, and you are cleaning a roof in the 4th picture.

For those curious about hose, this is a good example.
The second picture is a Mallard Person using the same pump as Squirtgun is using in the last picture, a Shurflo.
Mallard had 44 trucks in their day, and all used small shurflo 12 volt pumps.
Look at the difference in Flow ?

SOME feel that big hose "causes" more run off ?

MY opinion is that operator skill controls run off.

With a big pump/big hose, you simply move faster.

In picture one, that is me using a 20 GPM John Blue Pump.

SEE any run off ?

Just as some can not handle a really fast Motorcycle, some can't handle big hose and big pumps.

Smaller hose and smaller pumps work for them.

Plenty of roofs have been cleaned with smaller diameter hose and small pumps.

Just not nearly as fast as those of us with faster equipment.

95 percent on my work is JUST roof cleaning.

My guys do several roofs a day.

Having a fast roof cleaning set up is important to me.

If you just do a roof every now and then, you may like the space and cost savings of a slower set up ?

Warning, SHC and Batterys do not mix

I was cleaning a roof about 11 years ago.
A junk Nissan truck was in d way.
Guy said dont worry about it.

Mix dripped on the hood, and it went BOOM

The Mix hit the leaking old battery, acid and mix came together, perhaps it sparked ?

The hood had a 1 foot rise in it from where battery exploded :D

Be warned, unless you LIKE explosions :D

Good gracious! That's gotta suck!

Here's a great thread Tim posted a while back. No arguing with physics or proof.

Yes, that issue of hose size vs performance was put to bed long ago Mike:)
Some dont like the bigger hose, and that is ok.
Let em use what they want, it's all good :)
But for those of us wanting maximum pressure and flow at the Nozzle, big hose wins, hands down.
Like Tim showed us, we want to keep the size as big as practical, and the length as short as possible.

Hey, today I worked the ground on a job.
It was a 3500 sq ft flat tile roof with shrubs all around, hedges.

The ONLY spickets were way in back of the house.
Had to use 200 feet of water hose to get all the shrubs.

You could FEEL the water pressure drop when we added the second length of 100ft of hose!

I got RID of the second 100 feet as soon as I could :)

Water Flow and Pressure improved as SOON as I did.

Until then, I was forced to slow my roof guy down to keep up with run off.

Although it is a point to consider, and anything is a possibility. I have the battery mounted in a sealed battery box inside the storage bin. Plus I have Eight 1inch holes drilled in bottom of box just in case a hose does leak or blow off. I also have 6 vent holes drilled in upper part of box (inside handle wells) for added ventilation if I forget to open lid when working.

I like the 1/2 for ease of use, and 200' of the 1/2 pliovic just fits on my reel!

A guy starting out shouldn't have trouble with a smaller hose. As their technique gets better, jumping up to the larger hose with higher flow would seem a logical move.

I may bump up to 5/8 next season and do a side by side comparison, time is money.

Right now I just have 'familiarity inertia'. I have, use, and like the 1/2. Distance isn't much of an issue, to shoot far we use the Bandit instead of the Dele.

My favorite thing is trying something different that blows me away. I'm a ds convert this year too, man what was I thinking before.

Cool :)
Remember, Chlorins is a Liquid AND a Gas
Gas can seep, you go BOOM, and then you weep

Just having some fun :)

You know what you are doing, and looks like you have taken precautions.

In MY case, mix dripped right on the battery.

I dont think some fumes will be enough, but please let me know if it goes BOOM ?

I LIKE explosions !

Ever take a plastic 2 litre bottle, take some muriatic acid in the bottom, and put some crumpled up aluminum foil in it ?

You cap and shake it, and toss it into a pond.

Wait for a few minutes, and it goes BOOM.

Easy way to Fish.

The Bandit has enough pressure to overcome small hose, the 12 volt Delavan dont.

The Bandit will spray better with 5/8 hose at less pressure then with 1/2 inch.

But like you said JC, your reel only holds what it holds.

You MAY just keep the 1/2 inch, and crank up the pressure a bit to compensate ?

BTW, I am sure you know this, but for the newbie, unwinding ALL your hose is a no cost way to shoot a bit farther, IF needed.
Coiled hose has pressure drop.

Like Squirtgun says, use what hose is right for YOU :)

Me and Jesus Christ? Wow that's a pretty big mix up!!
:) :) :) :)

That's not a bad link, any idea where it's from?

That's the type of thing customers need to see. I like the basic matter of fact tone.

I hate reading the; energy bills going up, roof being eaten away, causes allergy problems type scare tactics. Intellegent customers see right through that stuff.

Yeah, it is one of the better ones I have seen, but no idea where it came from ?
Oops, googles it, here is where it came from http://www.cliksource.com/home/8-most-faqs-about-roof-cleaning/#comment-899

Says it is a free article for web sites ?

SOME of these "free articles" require a link to their author, but I see nothing to indicat that on this free web article page ?

Be SURE and Spell Check It ?

It has Algae misspelled as Alga

Alga, Alga, Algebra on my Roof

Can someone give me the Algebraic Equation for the roof cleaning nation, so I can go on vacation on a Southern Plantation.

There is no arguing about flow differences from diameter to diameter. Your pumps capibilities and hose length will dictate what diameter you need to get your desired flow and pressure. I prefer to use 1/2" when I can due to its weight and pliability. We run 300' lines, our soap pump doesn't build much pressure so we run the first 150' with 5/8" and then 150' of 1/2" with good results. Our rinse pump, 300' of 1/2" because it's strong enough to get away with it.
