NO BLEACH roof cleaning? Help!!

Wow, I can't believe that product is still around!:speechless: Especially with all of the info on the net these last couple of years about the right ways to clean roofs. Even little old ladies here in Florida know that bleach kills mold!:winknudge:

Chlorine should be the safest chemical on earth-Starts as salt and ends up as salt. Right?

I told her that I didn't want anyone to mistakenly associate me with their company because of their lies.
That's when it started....

I hung up.
:p

They claim the sodium hypochlorite heats up it disperses as a gas and that gas harms the ozone. I say show me proof.

+10 I would tell them to show me the proof, there is enough B.S. and lies out there trying to sell alternative roof cleaning chemicals that are actually more damaging to roofs than the SH solutions.

I would like to see the proof of their claims and I would ask the homeowner also to ask for proof, studies, reports by reputable companies, not by the companies selling the SH alternatives as they have an agenda.

Enough of the lies and B.S.!!!!!

Here is owens corning recommended roof cleaning method.

CAUSES
Algae growth causes a dark discoloration on roofs. The algae is usually brown to black in color which results in a streaked, dirty looking rooftop. It can be mistaken for soot, dirt or tree droppings, which typically produce only localized discoloration. It's caused by the growth of air-borne algae which deposits on your roof. The good news is that algae growth does not affect the service life of your roofing material. It occurs most often in warm, humid climates such as the Southeast (where algae-resistant shingles are available).
RECOMMENDATIONS
Discoloration of roofs caused by fungus or algae is difficult to remove, but may be lightened by spraying a diluted solution of chlorine bleach, trisodium phosphate, and water onto the roof. Solutions range from one cup TSP, one gallon bleach and four gallons of water, to one cup TSP and 2.5 gallons each of bleach and water. This solution can then be rinsed from the roof in 10 to 15 minutes. Do not scrub. Scrubbing will loosen and remove granules. After spraying be sure to thoroughly flush the roof and the greenery around the home (grass, bushes and shrubs) with water. The effectiveness of this type of cleaning may only be temporary, and the discoloration may recur. High pressure washing is not recommended due to the possibility of removing granules, thereby shortening the life of the Roofing System.
For a more permanent solution, re-roof with Owens Corning Algae-Resistant Shingles. They are specifically designed to inhibit most algae growth for extended periods of time and are backed by our strongest product and algae resistance warranties* available to homeowners.
*See actual Algae-Resistant shingle warranty for details. Algae-Resistant products are not available in all areas. Contact your local Owens Corning supplier for more informatio

Even these shingles will get the roof fungus on them after about 7-8 years so even these better, more expensive shingles are not perfect. There are some out there that have copper and zinc granules in them that have been found to cause issues with rain gutters.

So, there is no permanent, effective solution to the roof fungus out there, you just have to clean the roof as needed with a safe and effective cleaning solution like the roof manufacturers recommend so it will not void your roof warranty.

They claim the sodium hypochlorite heats up it disperses as a gas and that gas harms the ozone. I say show me proof.

Actually back in the 90's the US Gov pushed to have chlorine gas outlawed. The biggest user of Chlorine Gas was water treatment plants. The US EPA demanded they switch to something more environmentally friendly that would not eat up the ozone layer and guess what they all switched out to.......................Sodium Hypochlorite. It is one of the safest chems on earth!

Ok, I went out to give the home owner, that was asking all the questions about bleach, an estimate for the roof cleaning. I had my information, that Russ armed me with, and had a nice conversation with the home owner. After we talked she read the recomendations and knew she was lied to from the Roof shampoo guy and called him on the phone while I was there. Well he called me a fly by nighter. She called him a lier and we are cleaning that roof in a week or so! Nice size roof I might add. Thanks for all the info guys.
The Roof shampoo guys are putting signs up all over town saying NO BLEACH roof cleaning. I feel like ripping them down.

Way to go Jim. That feels good don't it? I can also see how picking up some litter off our roadways would make you feel better too.

Now to complete the death blow have that homeowner file a complaint with the State Attny Generals office division of Consumer Affairs and tell how she was lied to. If a consumer launches a complaint it holds more watter than if you do and they will investigate it. It will be a can of worms that might drive them out of your area or at least drop the No Bleach thang!

In a lot cities those bandit signs are illegal, a call to the enforcement office might end up with a warning or possibly a fine, you can help clean up the city by helping them remove the illegal signs or calling them to let them know where the eyesores are so they can take them down.

It is sad when companies have to lie to customers about chemicals, litter the environment with their signs and lie about what the competition is doing or methods.

I hope the homeowner does the right thing and reports them, who knows, that company could possibly be damaging roofs and costing the homeowner's $1000's of dollars each time they get up on a roof to clean it with their system.

Thanks, I will point that out to the customer.

Here is some more Roof Cleaning Recall Information if you scroll down the page. There are 2 roof cleaning recall and danger links that should scare the chit out of any customer. If you suspect that the product you are up against contains Sodium Hydroxide, look your customer in the eye and say "You don't want LYE and pressure used on your roof, do you" ? Then, show them a Sodium Hydroxide MSDS Sheet about causing severe burns, tell them how it will burn the feet of their grandkids and Pets, and suck the oil right out of their asphalt, since it is a degreaSER. Show them Sodium Hydroxide is used in paint strippers, and it is. Tell them as the rinsed off sodium hydroxide runs down their walls, it will soften the paint.

Ugh, I can always tell when a customer has been to their site.

Hey Ed and Jim we should get together sometime.

Yah we should this winter sometime when i get back from key west.
