Hi All,

I am new to this site and have no hood cleaning experience.
I answered an ad for a hood cleaning job. This company is based in So. Cal and sub's out the work in northern California. They provide all of the jobs, but I have to schedule them and get them done. They provide 1 week's training and are paying $125 - $135 per job.
Does this sound legit? I am trying to decide if this is a business opportunity worth pursuing.

Thanks,

Gary

Don't forget the insurance, gas, equipment and so on. Working as a sub sounds good in the short run, but when you add, plastic, chemical and everything else your money in pocket is low. I for one don't sub and I own my equipment and my employees don't contribute a thing.

Good points David, I think the dollar amount sounds legit from what I have seen and heard. But as a sub you have all the cost of buying the proper equipment to do the job. As far as if its a good business opportunity is something you will have to decide. Its a good way to get some training and have a little cash flow if they provide you enough jobs, but consider all your cost and what type of no compete you will have to sign.

Another issue is the $125-$135-what type of jobs-need to ask what are the size of jobs-linear feet, number of fans, access doors, levels and so on. But most of all location of the unit. For 8 hours of work the $135 doesn’t look quite as good-Oh yes helpers pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :(

All i can say is good luck the $ sounds a little low per job, once you way in everything, and possiable time with travel it could be very little $ on the profit end but if you all ready have all the gear i would check it out a little better see what your getting in to.
Cleaning grease can be really hard and it's best you know some what about how to clean first. You don't want to spend all night on one, $135.00 bucks - plastic - chem - gas - and other supply,, hu

hope they are really easy jobs, i try to get the price up little, GOOD LUCK

Aside from the training part, it sounds legit. Training is a huge factor in determining a Independent Contractor vs. Employee relationship. This is more for them than it is for you, you can not be nailed for it.

I would also ask them if you need to have your own Worker's Compensation, if you are a Sole Proprietor, you can not claim WC on yourself, but you still need to have it in California, kind of a catch 22.

You should also find out about Liability Insurance, as an independent contractor, you should have it yourself, but you may want to find out if this company covers you under their policy. If they don't and something happens to a restaurant you performed work on, you will not have any representation.

See if they can help you find local suppliers of chemicals and plastic, those will be your biggest overhead, and you do not want to be buying plastic from Sherwin Williams or HD. This is of course if they are requiring that the jobs be cleaned to bare metal. If they are only requiring scrape quality work, you wont need any plastic and very little chemical, and the $125-$135 per job will be very lucrative for you.

Thanks for all of the help guys.

I have taken into account all of the costs as far as insurance and gas etc. I don't know what supplies will run however.Does anyone have a ball park on plastic and chemicals?
She told me that the $125 is for about 2 1/2 hrs worth of work in places like
Long John Silvers or Sizzler.
She said that they would sell me a powerwasher for $3350.00.Not sure what the specs on that machine are.

I think HD and SW charge around $40/roll for 2 mil 8x200. Chemicals are going to be up to you, everyone is different, and you will have to find out what works best for your set up. I would say that whoever is offering the training will probably have chemicals you can buy from them, they may even have the plastic as well and you should be able to get it cheaper from them. You are looking at probably $1/lb for a good dry chem and around $8/gal for wet.

Run Forest Run - If you can do a Sizzler in 2.5 hours-I would like to see the end product. As a rule Sizzler have some old units with multi hoods and strange configurations.
