need help with lettering on tank

Hello Everyone,
I was having my 325gal water tank lettered yesterday along with my tool box and after an hour the letters started peeling off of the water tank. The water tank is either polyethelyene or polypropylene and I need help with how to get the letters to stick. Maybe I need to paint the ends of the tank so the letters will stick. The Painter said that the paint will have to be a gloss enamel for the letters to stick. The Painter had never lettered a tank before and did not know what to do. The letters and numbers were vinyl with adhesive..The Commercial ones, not just the ones you buy at the store. Does anyone have any ideas? Anyone run into this problem before? Please help. Thanks.

Okay Okay, I'll post it again. Sorry guys but I have carpal tunnel syndrom and typing makes my hand fall asleep..lol

Fill your tank up with water before you apply any lettering and make sure the surface is clean before you apply the letters.. When you put the letters on an empty tank and then fill it up the tank expands and stretches the letters until they pop off.
