My hometown is slap crazy. Read on...

That's always a great place to start. Cut kids programs borrow another 56 billion from china and send it to Africa , hati and now japan so they can play baseball.

Do they realize what these sport generate in revenue for the area?

Wait the know we will private pay our children into private programs.

Did I really wake up to this today?

There is a really good reason why sports are cut, along with other programs, like music. They hit the areas hardest that kids like, because people get up in arms and say, "Don't do that, we would rather raise taxes." That is the same reason that the always announce cuts to police and fire, etc. Hit people in their personal hot spots and they will be more susceptible to tax increases.

Bingo! You win a prize!

Now I now just laugh when I hear such nonsense. We've had Fayth in homeschool through almost two grades now. She is involved in three times more sports and other activities now than is available in public schools. And the costs are cheap because it's not paid for with never ending tax dollars.

If we all let them play these silly games and cut, cut, cut for a while, pretty soon there would be nothing left to cut but the FAT BUREAUCRATS who take up a huge majority of the budget and all the funding spent on illegals. (And while they are at it they can stop building schools that look like the Taj Mahal)

I would say that they should all then enroll in JROTC...which is what I did...but a lot of our after school activities were presenting Colors at the ball games...which without ball games would be impossible. We also practiced drills for competions, but its not the same as playing a sport.

I say cut EVERYTHING that's not necessary until budget problems are resolved. State and city finances are no different than your own. If you can't pay the bills, little johnny doesn't get to play soccer. SORRY!! But it has to be accross the board, not just where its convenient.

I wonder how the human race survived prior to all this. Surely Thomas Edison would have never invented anything if he hadn't learned competition from Jr High volleyball.

All joking aside there's absolutely nothing wrong with sports. It's a great learning tool. But there are millions who have lost their jobs. Millions of households have had incomes cut in half or in some cases lost all income (my sister and her husband were both let go in the same day after 9 years + with the same company)

There would be plenty of money left for sports if 50% of the bureaucrats in the school districts were next on the list of jobless.
There would be plenty of money left or sports if teachers unions (and ALL public employee unions for that matter) were disbanded and the teachers sacrificed like everybody else in times like these.
There would be plenty of money left for sports if politicians were jailed for taking bribes from the book companies to sell $3.00 books to the school districts for $150.00!

Let the kids suffer. It will make them stronger than the pansy a**es we've become from being coddled.

Why should all taxpayers pay for some little brat to kick a ball into a net? If you want your kids to play then pay and join a league.

PE and sports I just say is a different issue. more kids are fat now, way more than when I was in school. Kids need more exercise not less, IF and I say IF, they cut sports in schools and PE, the health costs will come at us one way or another. Its a catch 22 in most everything thats going on now.
Dam* Obama

Keep the PE, get rid of breakfast, dinner and weekend meals for freeloaders. That might do some good. :)

None of these kids are starving in this country. The one's who aren't eating right have parents who are on crack and forget to buy food. That's a law enforcement problem regarding child endangerment, not an education problem.

They have already cut out a lot of the sports like softball in the middle schools here. A non-profit is sometimes set up and if your 6th - 8th grade daughter wants to play softball, pay the non-profit $200 for the short season and you can play. You get a jersey that you have to give back at end of season. Poor kids don't have a chance to play as they can't pay the $. My daughter's school only had 8 that would pay, which doesn't field a team so funds were returned. We found a city league to join up softball with as my daughter is a budding left-handed pitcher and she LOVES to play. As long as she remains on at least A/B honor roll, she can play both spring and fall ball. She has never made a C!!!

If cuts in sports are absolutely necessary to keep our schools running, then cut away!! It is a shame though.

I know by cutting the sports that J-Ville will see a serious spike in criminal activity because it is something that keeps the would be gang kids out of that environment.

While I agree, who defines "necessary"?
I think admin is too heavy! If you don't teach a class, and you're not the principal (who could teach a class) and janitorial/maint , you shouldn't be on payroll (may be some obvious exceptions)!
We clean for the county schools (at cost) and it is amazing how many offices there are outside of school campuses. I'd look at cutting some of that "support" staff/services before cutting in classrooms and athletics! I deal with 3 redundant offices that could be cut...but I'm pretty sure they are unionized! The kids and parents aren't!

I agree kids need more excercize, but not at school. School should be for learning. The parents need to surgically remove the iPhones and game controllers from their kids hands, put them outside with a bike and leave them there till dark. And stop feeding them 27 cokes a day.

Scott, you never cease to amaze me. You are spot on. You must be a republican. Is that a gun and Bible you are clinging to? :)

These days you literally have to shut everything off and lock the doors to get kids to go outside. If it isn't TV or Video games it's Youtube. Fayth is sent out on a regular basis with NOTHING to entertain her. That's the only way she will exercise her mind.

You mean she goes outside because of good parenting and the government didn't have mandate that it happen?? Surely you jest
