muffler problem

I have two 13 hp Honda engines with a mufler problem. The mufler bolts keep backing out or breaking off. I have had to rethread them a few times. Any ideas???

I tried lock tight. Even jb weld on the threads. I think it gets to hot for lock tight.

I will bet everything I own that it is a Honda 13hp direct drive...

Red loctite (263) will beging to loosen at 100C, which the head of your engine easilly achives when it is running.
If you have allready had to re-thread the holes Heli-coil the hole to the next size up and use a 5 grade or higher bolt with a lock washer, DO NOT overtighten the bolt torque it to 100 ft/lbs ( someone might know if that is correct, it is what I have allways torqued them too.)

I had a shop heli coil one of tv engines already. Worked for a month

Maybe a welder :D

I clean the hole with a 5/16" drill, thread the head 3/8", drill out the hole in the muffler flange, use grade 5 bolts and lockwashers.

I havent done it yet. I have been thinking of putting on a ATV muffler and flex pipe. This should help with the loud noise and the heavy weight. I will bolt it the frame on top.
Mine has broken twice on watt.

I am thinking more and more about running a electric clutch off of the truck motor.

Bears - I share your exhaust hardware curse. I haven't had any more trouble since I put on high strength allen head bolts (since two of the bolts are conveniently designed to be IMPOSSIBLE to get a tool on) - lock washers and double exhaust gaskets, I am a fan of doubling the gaskets.

Why do they never come with lockwashers? I always guessed there was a reason like the gaskets give a little or something but they need them.

Here's a trick that saved me not long ago. If a bolt breaks off and you can't get it out any other way, hold a nut over it and weld into the hole, connecting the bolt and nut so it can be turned.

If the nuts keep backing off you can double nut them ant they will stay on. You just put a second nut on and tighten it to the first and it should not come off.

Honda has had problems with their gaskets collapsing thus leaving the manifold loose and allowing the vibration to break the studs. Visit with your local Honda repair shop, they should be able to help you.

LOL. My local Honda repair shop "ace hardware" had a hard time figuring out what gasket goes on the 13 hp.

Mine just broke again for the 3rd time. That right 3 times In 3 1/2 years. Honda shop whats $450 fix it. Now its off watt.

I am going to buy header pipe then hook up a fex pipe to the muffler. This should remove the weight off the bolts that kept on breaking. Drill and tap out the bolts.

I have been thinking of putting a diffent engine in it. Perhaps a 18hp kohl?
Not sure if it will fit? or would work since it is a direct drive

Larry you are right its a Honda 13hp direct drive Landa hot water unit with the wheels.

Locktite and a double nut set up worked for my 24hp. I bought them stainless steel and they have held up good its been about a year or so now
