Medium Duty Trucks

Does anyone have much experience with medium duty commerical trucks such as the ISUZU NPR and the Mitsu FE models? I was wanting to know if anyone could provide me any info on fuel consumption and possible ball park estimates on fitting a cab/chassis with a custom style box or just plain box (say 14 to 16 ft).

I thought maybe I could get some real world experience info before speaking with a salesman type.

Give me a call, I have had diesel Isuzu npr's since 1989. also have a GMC W-4. 12 foot to 16 foot boxs. gvw's 11,500 /14,500. MPG mileage varies with each truck depending on load. Still these trucks remain economical, parts are big $$$ but they don't break down very often. I owned chevys P-30's and Ford E350's and 450's and would take the low cab overs anyday over the others!

Ditto what Scott said. We run a FE - great truck - easy to drive - very dependable.

Fuel economy - I would say I'm at about 12 (I only figured it out for the first couple of months I owned it). The point is with regular maintenance and care they last a long time and total operating costs is lower.

If you are looking for a speed demon though - I think you are looking at the wrong vehicle. I will not win any races from job to job - but look at all the more advertizing I do -you can read the entire truck as I pass. LOL

Scott and Tim,

Thanks for the input. I appreciate your willingness to share your experiences with these trucks.

Scott - I may try to give you a ring next week sometime. PM me with some times that are good for you.

Tim.
Speed Demons there Not. lol. Very true but seem to run within the speed limits once you get up to speed, I still will take longevity and the fuel economy also how many trucks drive like these with the tight turning radius and great visibility compared to my other trucks my NPR's drive more like a car, a real slow car that is....

I have had two Isuzu NPR's and think they are great. Both have been crew cabs with a 12 foot flat bed. They have a great lease program called Smart Lease with a firm buyout price after 4 years.

My first unit was a victim of a freeway accident and fire-total. I went back and replaced the truck. I am sold on Isuzu-we had the first one for a year-I could post some pics if you want.

Here is some intresting information I found about a new International Medium Duty truck...

International goes small

Online Exclusive, Mar 1 2004

International Truck and Engine Corp. says its new CF Series low-cab-forward truck model marks the OEM’s entry into the Class 4 –5 market with an “all-new product designed and produced in North America, for North American customers.

It is specifically aimed at customers in urban areas seeking a truck “that’s easy to drive, efficient to maintain and economical to own,” according to the OEM.

First two models in the CF Series will be the CF 500 (maximum 16,000-lb. GVWR ) for Class 4 and the CF 600 (maximum 19,500-lb GVWR) for Class 5 applications.

Both will be powered by the newly developed International VT 275 diesel. The 4.5-liter V6 boasts peak ratings of 200 hp @ 3,000 rpm and 440 lb-ft torque @ 1850 rpm. The OEM points out the new powerplant is built on technology first used for its VT 365 diesel V8. The CF’s integrated powertrain will also include a five-speed overdrive automatic transmission as standard.

The truck is designed to offer “great ride and handling along with superior visibility and maneuverability,” noted Dave Johanneson, group vp & gm for International’s Medium Vehicle Center. “Drivers will immediately notice its responsive power, smoother shifting and quiet, comfortable cab environment.”

The CF Series is built on a high-strength, low-alloy steel frame with 34-in. wide frame rails, taper-leaf front suspension and standard front and rear shocks. PTO capability is offered optionally.

“Buyers of cabover trucks have never had a consistent or reliable North American choice,” stated Johanneson. “By extending the International brand into these markets, we’ll offer high standards of powertrain reliability as well as the industry’s best parts and service support through our dealer network.’

All International dealers will offer the trucks for sale. First orders will be accepted late this year and production is slated to begin next January. For details, go to www.internationaldelivers.com.
