For fear of asking a stupid question, is there a starter on the motor?

yep it has a starter but looks like someone removed the switch.. It is a regular GX390 1 inch shaft motor..It is missing the solonid but I got one off my old motor.. just didnt have the ignition switch.. I think someone cut the wires and put different ends on the wires coming off the motor .. I bought it from a guy that was going to use it for a go kart.. Gave 450.00 for it .. it was in the box but he said he didnt have the ignition switch ..Motor still looks new and Air filter is not even dusty and the muffler is not even burnt at all.. It starts right up and one of the wires I know is the charging wire coming out of the motor and I found the black wire that kills the motor but thats all I have found

I'll have to look it up in my service manual. There are 3 different charging systems on Hondas (3, 10, and 20 amp), and I think they all use different control boxes.

Ok here is what I have done so far .. on the side of the block there is a wire coming out of a nut with a rubber washer in it .. It does not ground out but yet there is no voltage coming out of it .. It s also hooked thru a brass looking diode or something...Then there is a wire coming out from the front part of the motor just behind the front red housing and it is grounded out.. I think one of these should be the charging wire but neither on is.. Well I still have the pull start so I will use this tonight for my all night job..Then tommorrow when I wake up I will take the front cover off the motor to see whats going on

last night when I was working I tried a couple of test I believe the wire coming out of the front housing of the motor is the 3 amp charging wire.. I touched it and I must have been grounded to something because I got a little shock.. Well anyway I took my DVM ( Digital meter out and measured DC Voltage on the wire and it would go from 6v to 9v to 16v then back to 9v , it never stayed steady.. I will take some pics tommorrow , I am going to take the front cover off and try to find the stator..

I found this picture of a wiring diagram online and I believe my motor has the 3 amp charging system ... I don't know what wires got to what but after removing everything as far as the switch there are 3 wires that are coming from the motor one is coming from the charging coil , one is coming from the side of the crankcase and one is coming from where the coil is.. So the one from the coil has 2 connections on it I am thinking one is for the low oil shutdown..

The gray wire coming from behind the fan cover is the charge wire. It hooks up to the white on the control box. The black wire with the red stripes are the grounds - one hooks to the black wire coming from behind the fan cover, the other hooks to the black on the low oil alert unit (the gold colored box that the yellow also hooks to).
