Log Cabin - Half Log Replacement and Chinking - In progress

I thought I would start a thread showing the progress of a job we are doing that involves log replacement and chinking on an older log cabin in a historic small town with a lot of cabins in Medford Lakes, NJ. I will post what we are doing and feel free to ask questions. Obviously the first pictures will be the "befores" which if you look close you can see some rotting on the logs. Basically the lower logs on the cabin are rotting and need replacement. After we removed the logs we determined what needed to be done for each area. Most needed 3/8" plywood and one area needed 3/4" plywood. We then put tar paper up over the plywood. After that we put up chicken wire. We put in chicken wire to help hold the chinking we will be installing. Some areas we still needed to put slats up especially where we didn't have to replace plywood. After this we plastic up the area until we install logs.

When ordering logs they come in one inch variables like 4"-5" or 5"-6". They were split and debarked for us as ordered. Logs come barked and debarked and of course you pay more to have them debarked. Usually they come in a little rough and also need to be cleaned. some people still use TSP to clean them too!

In these pictures one coat of stain has been applied to the logs. We are in the process of applying the chinking to match the old chinking with a common recipe of 1 part Portland Cement, 3 parts Sand, 1/2 part Masonry Lime. These pictures show the chinking being applied and before drying. Next we will clean logs and finish staining so finished pictures to come.
