lights in plenum

Steve looked at a system that has him stumped, so if anyone has seen something similiar, let me know. Fast food outlet in a mall, usually not a big deal. But this location has lights hardwired in the plenum (behind the filters). Tried to find the contractor that built the system, but he is (of course) out of business. Anyone ever seen this?
Thanks,
Karen

It could be a UV system. Were the lights like a fluorescent bulb? If so walk away, lots of issues. If it is a older system, I would still walk until I found out why the lights.

Well, we can't walk away, it's part of a chain we do. Grant, the picture is close, but these lights are actually at the top of the hood, partially obstructing the duct. They are flourescent type. ANy suggestions?

At the last IKECA meeting we had a class on UV hoods. I would take down the information on the face plate and call Jim Roberts at Derby PW. Those bulbs alone are $300 ea. and they will brake with little movement. I would have the information on hand when speaking with Jim. In the event that you still have a problem give me a call.

Karen, How did it turn out? What did you learn that you can share?

Can you turn of power source to lights, then remove them, cover up light receptacles, and then vacume out receptacles before returning lights?

I understand they are pricey Ya have to to what you have to do. I would elaborate to them you are not responsible for the lights.Maybe get it in writing before cleaning.

Make sure if you power down it does not start a new mode at the control panel-fire alarm and so on. These type of system tend to offer design protection-just check it out.

Maybe disable entire sytem. I know only to be done by properly trained personel.

The problem is, the manufacture has had so many issues with store employees turning things on and off some have placed a system that prevents no authorized people trying to manage the system. In fact they have an owner and a service key to prevent no authorized access. By no means am I saying that this system has these bumps-just beware of the trip wires.

Okay, got it resolved. The location has decided the lights aren't doing any good, and is taking resposibility for removing them and sealing it up. Then we go in and clean like usual. Nice to have a customer that recognizes that its their exhaust system and their responsibility.
