Lets talk about throwing rocks.

I don't have much going this weekend so I was thinking about throwing some rock bags but was wondering about a few things...
1. How many complaints do you get from HO's?
2. Do you target certain neighborhoods?
3. Has anyone been fined for littering?
4. How about placement...are you chucking it in the HO's yard or driveway or window?
5. How much success have you personally had from throwing rock bags?
6. Are you putting business cards in your bags or something else?

Thanks

I dislike finding rock bags on my property and I also dislike finding business cards rubber banded to my mailbox or gate.
I feel it makes you look like a low baller that isn't willing to spend money on proper advertising.

Sorry, just sayin

Being an exterior cleaning company, throwing stuff in people's yards isn't the kind of message I want to send to potential customers. That type of marketing doesn't fit my brand.

Good luck though.

Wade you do what you have to do to get work even if it means door to door sales.. When you are targeting certain subdivisions look in your county appraiser website or realtor.com for mid to high priced homes. Ex is 300 to over a million dollar neighborhoods. Then get a list of addresses and started chunking rocks. If you get to an area that is gated think about makeing personalized letters with your business info Customers will pay attention to it! There is a lot more ideas that can be said but some require alittle more investment. For example if you have money IMO the best advertising you can make will the truck wrap I'm fixing to get mine done here in a couple of weeks. There is nothing more noticeable than a rolling billboard!! From a newbie to a newbie don't lower your prices keep them firm and don't budge, in my area I have notice threw simple market research that there are a lot of lowballers and the reason is because I'm next to the border. You have expenses and profit goals that you have to maintain to stay in business don't let these hacks get you down because you got under bid. Good luck brother!!

I agree w Guy. I also don't throw them because I have never seen a positive reaction from a customer picking them up as they immediately take them over to their trash can, without even looking at them. About 8 years ago I advertised in a local weekly newspaper that is thrown out to every home once a week. One of those local community newspapers. I did very well off the advertising in it. I even remember seeing customers picking them up in the driveway and taking them into the house to read them. I stopped advertsing in it about 5 years ago as it just wasn't paying for itself.

Now 8 years later, I see some of the same customers homes and that same newspaper is sitting in the driveway or yard water logged and sometimes their is 2-3 weeks worth of them lying there. Or I will see them pick them up and take then to the garbage can with out even looking at them. WHY?? Because that same newspaper is available on line.

Spend the money your going to spend on Rock Flyer's, Bags, and Rocks...and create a Good Quality Web Site...(call me if you need some help w that) Get a great looking Business Card and hand it to everyone you see. Get good truck signage that easily communicates what you do and how to get a hold of you. A wrap is great...as long as your info doesn't get lost in the wrap. To often times I see a great looking wrap, and after they have passed me by, I think, Ok what is that they do again. Most people today are taking pics' of truck signage and then calling, so make sure what you do and the phone # stand out, and are easy to read.

There are many that have had success w Rock Bags and many that have not. You just have to decide what's best to spend your resources on, and by resources I mean time, energy, AND MONEY.

Hope that helps.

I have never heard of rock bags until I got here. I really wouldnt want to throw rock bags at anyones house EVER. Just seems to corny to me. and texmex Of course you are entitled to your opinion about truck wraps. I do think they work, somewhat!. I think they are more for image. I cant remember the numbers exactly but the average person has only a few seconds to get all the information they need. first they have to see what you do, then they need your name, location and phone number. I think they have something like five seconds to get all this registered in their head. Then they need to write it down, And doing all that while they are drivin can be hard for some to do. Unless its something like " www.ipressurewashhouses.com". which leads them to the website. I would wrap my truck if the budget allowed for it, but right now I think that the www is a better spot to invest those vehicle wrap dollars.

I live on a road that has 7 neighborhoods on it. One way in and one way out. At the entrance I have a 4x8 sign with Roof Stain Removal, logo, number, ect... I have small plastic stakes ordered from landscape advertising company. I have gone by many $450,000 and less home with stained roofs or homes for sale and inserted stake near mailbox with my card and magnet. Amazingly un productive.
I think throwing things in the yard will be a waste of time.

Why not download Street Bidder and take pictures of house to send postcards. http://streetbidder.com/

I think I'll start saving pennies for a website.

You should not spend one dime on other forms of marketing until you have built the foundation for your marketing.......your website. You'll just be throwing away time and money.

If a customer doesn't have a way to "Verify" or see your business online (website) all the postcards, flyers, doorhangers, or whatever aren't gonna do a bit of good.

Just Saying.

Just want to say thanks to everyone for the input and ideas. I personally think rock bags seem tacky but I'm willing to try anything if it works. I think I'll start saving pennies for a website.

You would be surprised at how inexpensive it is to get a website going. Often you can get domain name and hosting for $100. Then use WordPress, which is super easy to use, and you can have a site up and going. It will take time to fine tune the site as it is a never ending project. But I am just starting out and have been getting calls from my website and nothing else.

If Ron says it works, I'd try it! Might work on that soon actually...

I have never done it, but I get them in the drive. I also look at most of them. I used a guy from the rock bag once way before I ever heard of AC doing it.

I think I get them more because my house is profiled as clean large and money!! I do not think targeting track houses will work. I do get annoyed at the flyers taped to gate and never look at those. I always look at rock bag!!

Maybe for me it's just the idea it's cool and different, I have seen some better ones versus ones I would never call. A guy used dirt once, landscaper. I didn't think that was cool
