lets call PHIL Akland Hood Expert in Kitchen Cleaning & Pressure washing

Oh no.....I like being certified. It makes me feel good. An example would be the most recent job I completed. A three day nightmare, running around in circles on a riverboat made permanent land fixture school tax generating retirement ruining mess of a 10 kitchen attempt to make people feel like they get what they are paying for type of facility....I didn't want to get too descriptive of the location. If I weren't certified I don't think I would have made it through, it's kind of like that little yellow pill.....followed by a green one.....and 2 blue ones. It just makes me feel better about myself and my surroundings.

I don't think he will join this bbs or any other. ....and what ever happened to Phil's the Jan.25 meeting in phx????..........

Stas427, go to philackland.com and read his bio. He has cleaned those nasty greasy ducts, worked until the sun came up, been disgusted w/the lousy job done by others, been upset w/the inspectors who did not know grease and cared less. Phil Ackland may not "get dirty on the job" now, but he has in the past. He has taken a different approach to duct service than the rest of us. He has changed his focus to teaching and education. I am glad he did, even though his focus has not reached Oregon yet.

Do most of on these boards need to be certified? No. Our experience is our certification. Do the new greaser need certification? Yes.

Phil's certification is by way of class room education. I do not know of any classroom that can cover each hood system and their associated problems that is in the field. Even Rusty's much touted on the job training cannot do that. But certification is a way of showing some competancy.

Douglas Hicks
General Fire Equipment Co of Eastern Oregon, Inc
Member NFPA, NFSA, ORFED, NAFED
Certifed by NAFED in the service of fire extinguishers
Certified by Ed O'Brian in the service of fire suppression systems
Authorized Amerex Distributor.
All of the above has no bearing on how I or my company acutally does anything.

Wow - that Hicks is really something! His curriculum vitae is longer than his post. Move over Ackland.

What would be great is if we had a guy who just went out and tested stuff out and rated it based on how productive it was. As long as he could stay unbiased, and was not payed to endorse any product, it would be invaluable. I can't tell you how many thousands of dollars worth of equipment and chemicals I have sitting around the shop that got used a couple of times that now collect cobwebs. I think I would pay good money for that.

The next best thing is BB's such as this one. If we ALL waste (let's say) $1000 each on "junk products" then we will eventually know what is good and what isn't good if we share our experiences. And in the end, we only wasted $1000 as apposed to $10,000.

The guy you mentioned in your post, the guy that tests stuff, would have to test 1,000's of products, all the way from foaming dish soap to pressure washers to ladders to hand mixed chemicals to all of the stuff we dream up in our heads (humm.. I wonder how this would work...). It would take a full time employee to make phone calls to get these items donated for evaluation.

Hmmm. Free banners, I dont know? Are we getting to commercial? Could be. All are allowed to voice there opinion and or product. If it aint broke why fix it? You want a banner? Get your own site, as many allready have.

I understand in the end its the chase of the allmighty dollar and control of the grease wars.

May as well take X amount of dollars for your name on top of the board and get it over with.

No disrespect meant to Phil or anyone else wanting a Banner.

AHJ OPinion

[Certification, as far as I am concerned, is just a way for someone to make a buck the easy way. I have no problem with that, I chose not to be a part of it though.[/QUOTE]

I have been reading some of the bb's and some of the comments you have are valid, but in my opinion some very important issues have been missed.

The issue on Certification : In Canada certification will be mandatory under the New National Fire Code of Canada. In some Provinces the code has been modified to fit specific applications found within that province, such is the case in the Alberta Fire Code. We have made provisions for more stringent requirements in some areas. For example Certification of Cleaners. In Alberta certification WILL be mandatory once the new code becomes law, this spring is the target date. Cleaners will be required to be certified within 6 mo. of the introduction of the code. My point being, choosing not to be a part of it will not be an option. Here In Canada !

Accepted Certification Providers : This is a VERY BIG issue within the cleaners community. Who should be recognised as a "Certification Provider" ? Without going into great detail the Alberta Fire Safety Association and the AHJ'S have accepted those providers who have demonstrated they instruct to NFPA 96 Standards and have been accepted by ISO 9001. This list is comprised of : IKEKA, International Kitchen Equipment Cleaner Association, PWNA Power Washers of North America, ASTTBC Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of B.C. and Phil Ackland.

I think the qeustion was do we want Banners for participating members? Not another commercial. Careful now, your starting to stumble over the "Rusty line" of "its all about me". lol Gotta give Rusty credit he keeps plugging away no matter what.

"Ron and I are actively working on a plan to have rotating banners of the active contractors on this board"
Above quote taken from Grants post.

Define--> active members. Does this mean after x amount of posts or atleast continous participation. Or do you have to contribute every day?

The banners that are being consdered for this site have zero to do with money.
No paid advertising period.
We are talking about banners for people that contribute to the education of others on this board. You cannot purchase a banner...go ahead send me a check and try me. (I will cash the check but you wont get a banner).

Stan, I applaud your efforts, now if we could get some AHJ's south of Canada to watch you, then we would all be winners.

anyone thats gets a banner will contribute, I would only want moderators to have banners. that will be up to grant, grant runs and controls the bbs.

attacking anyonewill never be allowed, if someone has abanner canweprofessionally talk about there products. YES

PWI is free andalways will be, no one will ever get special perksbecause they have banner. if there products suck, they probably willnot want a banner.

people need to always respect others but know you can always speak agaist products precedures openly and proffessionally.

Well I'm speakin out against this openly, honestly, and profesionaly.

Giving banners to only moderators IS giving control of the board to a few hand chosen individuals.
Then you've sacrificed the open forum for commercialism of a select few. This does not fit into the definition of open forum.

All or none. Anyone with 250 posts or more should qualify for part of the revoliving banner as long as they activly participate. I also need to make clear that I have great respect for Phil and the effort he has made for all of us. Now at the same time Lets keep this forum open shall we?

What ya think? Sounds reasonable to me.

Phil Ackland getting down and dirty!

Phil is currently out of the office but will be returning in a few days. We will be discussing the pros/cons to this whole banner idea, and hopefully Grant/Ron can send us some more information on the subject.

Someone did hit the nail on the head when they mentioned that Phil might not want to post because of time taken dealing with non-issues. I must admit that at times posting on this board seems a little un-productive. Posts start out concise, informative or with a great question/comment, but somehow deteriorate into what could almost be considered an argument.

I do have to laugh at people who think Phil doesn't get dirty. Even when he's teaching the fire inspectors (some of whom follow him around in their spotless suits carrying clipboards), he purposely digs around in hood troughs for some goop to show them, or scrapes chunkies off of old fans to make his point.

I found some "dirty pictures" of Phil for the amusement of you board (or is it bored) readers. He's using his finger to poke at the grease in two of the pictures, finally smartening up to use a ruler in the third, and the last will probably get me in trouble! It's Phil in a pile of fluffy grease!

Your attacking the wrong person here. Ive backed up the crusade for education of those who dont have any infield experience. I have stood up for those that have been doing it and dont require any training.

At this point I will be giving this board a rest for awhile.
I havent derived anything from here that I havent allready experienced for myself.
Good luck to all and Keep on Cleaning.
