Back to the texting issue, Shelly brought up some interesting points in a conversation last night:
There is a distinct level of hypocrisy and just plain ignorance in the "making" of these current "laws".
Shelly made the point that if we had the same kind of "kneejerk" policy making back when radios first came out in cars we'd all be running around in silent boxes by now.
Let's start a crusade. My friend Kevin almost lost his life in a motorcycle crash in 2006. Why? Because, as we were driving past Red Rock, he ran off the road while looking at the scenery, spending weeks in intensive care and months in rehab to learn to walk again. TIME FOR A NEW LAW - NO LOOKING AT SCENERY! How many lives could be saved if we just stopped looking at scenery? Close down all the national parks to all cars! Walking tours only. (till some moron bumps into someone else while gawking and we outlaw gawking and walking!)
What about all those billboards? Surely some idiot has crashed while reading a billboard encouraging him to "Attend your local church" or, in our case out here, shop at the local "adult bookstore". OUTLAW THEM! Better yet, just make it illegal to look at them while driving! That makes for a lot more income for the state as cops hide behind the billboards with a camera waiting for that tell tale "eye contact" that signals the PERP has just broken the law by taking his eyes off the road!
NO MORE KIDS!!!! This is a no brainer and EASY enforcement especially in gestapo states that limit window tint. Imagine all the income that could be generated by giving tickets to moms driving around with kids in the backseat. How many lives could be saved if mom just wasn't allowed to pass back those french fries or tend to that 44 ounce double gulp that is just about to spill on the back seat! NO kids in the car PERIOD! We NEED this law! Lives are being lost every day by inattentive moms crashing all over the place!
See how ridiculous all this is? Where does it end?
It ends at personal responsibility.
It ends when insurance coverage stops covering stupidity and covers true accidents only.
