Help! I am 18 and just about to graduated from high school this spring. I like in Saginaw, MI. Throughout high school I have mowed lawns in the summer, but the competition is very competitive and I have not been able to increase my business size. I have noticed that there are not many power washers in the area and I would like to start up a small power washing business. I have used a power washer a few times, but not nearly enough to be able to go out to a client and do a job. Once I get my equipment I plan to practice on my own house and on families houses. I have been reading up on the posts and have learned a lot and I have also bought a book on pw. Now, my budget is not very big, so I will have to start small. I plan on doing mainly sideings, driveways, and hopefully decks. I realize that I will have to start off charging by the sq foot due to my lack of experience. I was wondering if anyone could email me a copy of the pricing sheet that they use in order to price a bid. Also, I was wondering how much insurance would run me. If you can hit me back with some advice it will be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Newbie Mark

Welcome Mark :)

You're off to a good start - doing your research and realizing that just jumping in blasting away at anything that doesn't move is not the best approach.

Geographically, I personally can't give you much to work with but hopefully someone else in here from your state or region can give you specifics.

Insurance is a must if you're serious about going into business. Joe Walters is an agent that is able to write for companies about anywhere in the US I believe.

I have some excel spread sheets that I will email you from various wood guys. You will also want to get information about different chemicals to use. Your better grades of chemicals will make your bottom line much nicer since they'll do most of the work for you.

You are pretty young, so you're going to have to put some emphasis on your appearance so folks don't think you're some college kid out for beer bucks. Make sure you have a professional look - logo a shirt, get a good business card and if you have a truck to put some signage on - you're a rolling billboard :)

There are some great veterans on this board who can give you tips on buying your equipment - my husband did all of that, I just wrote checks, so I'm not good in that department.

If you can find someone relatively close to you (not competitive close), try to tag along as free labor for a few days to get some real practical experience. You will learn more and run a lower risk of making a costly mistake than practicing on your own.

Keep reading the boards and asking questions.....like I said, you're on a good track now.
