Hyrdoforming, Pressure Washers and MythBusters

I love watching Myth Busters and this weeks episode explored the plausibility of medieval torpedoes. Now, what do pressure washers and medieval weapons have in common? Well, I’ll tell ya!
According to historical record, a tear shaped object was used to attack invading marine vessels. After a few small scale tests of varying designs, the Myth Busters decided upon a flat-bottomed, tear shaped object to test this myth. At first, Jamie welded a cannon ball to the end of a jack hammer to start shaping the sheet metal. Shortly thereafter, the weld broke and Jamie decided to try something new – Hydroforming!

After creating a mold or stencil of the tear shape, Jamie bolted the sheet metal underneath to a frame. He then used a pressure washer to pump water into the contraption. Sine sheet metal is malleable, the shape appeared within moments. He placed a top bar above the entire thing to know when to stop the pressure washer. Basically, this diagram, but upside down. It was very cool to watch and I was tickled pink that they used a pressure washer.
