How to FRY your Delavan...Roof Cleaning

Pressure Washer Products recommends UPSIZING the discharge hose on your Delavan pump. For example, if you have a 5850, use a 5/8" id hose and keep the length of the hose to a minimum or use two lengths of hose when you need the extra length. For a Delavan 7870 Fatboy, use at least a 3/4"id hose with the same idea in regards to hose length.

We have had many calls related to fried pumps/pressure switches that were not sold by PWP due to restrictions or hose friction loss. These 5850's and Fatboy's were not sold by PWP but were coupled with 1/2" polybraid hose instead of at least 5/8" Kuri Tec.

Also, do not use polybraid hose on the suction side of the pump. It will collapse under suction especially when it is warm out. DO NOT STARVE YOUR PUMP. Use an ag hose which tends to be more rigid. If the inlet of the pump is 1/2" use at least 3/4" id hose or even better, 1" id ag hose.

We answer the phone 24 hours a day and assist our callers with any tech help they may need no matter where they purchased the equipment.

Yes! We sell all Delavan models of pumps. The 5850-101E is $115 and the Fatboy is $215.

We give you two free nozzles of your choice with the purchase the pumps!

Good post Lori, we had had very little problems sice doing that 2 years ago ourselves

Yep, life is great with a big, fat hose.
As long as it's not too long....

I always ran 5/8 and just kept it to myself during the hose wars.

I've been told many times that the size of my hose was more than sufficient.

I have the Delevan 5850 setup with 200' of 1/2" polybraid hose with same on inlet side. Can I expect problems soon now that I am starting to clean more roofs? My setup already seems like it doesn't shoot near as far as when I first bought it. How has other setups equivalent to mine done over the long term? Thanks.

We have had many 'after 5 pm calls' already this year surrounding problems with the above mentioned set-up. It seems that the pressure switches fail prematurely. Go to the local hardware store and replace the supply/suction side of the pump with 3/4" or 1" ag hose. Get rid of the hose clamps and have the inlet barb crimped on with a brass ferrule. You may be sucking in air? Use a heat gun to warm up the hose end that should go to a slotted pvc filter. Ag hose is more rrigid than the poly braid. Using heat will allow that ag hose to slip over the sch 80 hose barb that you will twist into the filter. (WE DON'T RECOMMEND USING ANY TYPE OF STAINLESS STEEL MESH FILTER IN A TANK OF SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE) Does your pump cycle on and off? Are you using all 50 capacity nozzles? Have you tried using a 0040 for distance? Try using a ball valve and nozzle instead of the poly gun.

Great questions!

My pump continually cycles on and off even when gun is kept open with 200 feet of 1/2" hose. I will get a larger inlet hose to see if that helps. I will also try my 0040 for distance on the next job. If I continue to clean more and more roofs, I will need to add a backup pump. Thanks.

Restrictions such as the poly gun and too small of a ball valve are directly rated to trigger the pressure switch. We advise minimizing the on/off of the pump. Playing with the pressure switch without a pressure gauge is poor advice.

Respect that 12 volt pump, say a little prayer, rinse it thoroughly, minimize restrictions and finally....cross your fingers. It is an inexpensive investment for an outstanding ROI.

Many of the veteran 12v pump users will also recommend buying an extra pump to keep in the box in the truck or another dry place to allow you to quickly change the bad, problematic pump out when you are in the middle of a job. (It saves having to overnight a pump!)

Ive run a 1/2" hose with the fatboy for about a year. Just saying....

Same here. After getting all wiring straight we have had no problems. We run 5/8 from tank to pump and then 200ft 1/2 but my upgrade hose later
