How do some companies make money.

Bid a roof yesterday.... 7500 sq ft of real dirty 10-12 pitch asphalt roof. Winning bid was less than $600.00 (says the customer)

Mine was double that.

Been there. I dont ever consider a lower bid a "hack" or "low baller," I just figure their operating and overhead cost are less than mine. I am sure you know, but be prepared to increase your pricing should things not work out with the lower bid, when they come calling. Also, I would file their contact info for follow up in 2 or so years.

It happens! When my customers are iffy, I hand them a 10% coupon. If that doesn't work, I walk.

Roof prices are way way down. Too many spray and pray companies . I get the difficult jobs and no gutters jobs without competition . I just saw 2 incomplete jobs where they didn't spray enough solution on and I still can see the mold and one that was done next to one of my roof jobs and the mold is returning after 3 years and my job is mint.

Ron - you can never be sure.... I do believe it was considerably less because the first time I called him back he hung up on me. When I finally got him to talk he told me the pricing. I explained my pricing structure to him and wished him luck.

If he hung up on you, you don't want his business anyway. Anyone that hangs up on someone trying to help them is a douche!

I learned early on buyers lie, they maybe wanted a better price from you.

Often we get personality conflicts that start when consumers pull this move.

Al what was your response ? Have you ever sold anyone looking for a deal?

Keep in mind some consumers are justified to ask these questions.

Seriously would a guy to un clog my toilet be triple or double from the local comp?

Don't think your to high Just possibly not seeing it from there perspective.

This guy hung up took some guts to call back

Vent sometimes we all learn, I used to want to sell everyone. I got over myself.

I actually take all the tough sales, what some call tough anyway.

around here all sales are tough. A big employer in this region is shutting down and it's killed economy. Over 3000 jobs gone. People hanging on to their money I guess.

Sold Chevrolets for 32 yrs before i started this company. Calls are no problem for me. Used to do over 100 cold calls a day. Customers are not the problem. They are the reason we are in business. It's the people in our business. Had another roof today that i bid $900.00 on. Customer (who i think is a doctor) said he had a quote for 300. My chems, gas and labor would have been close to that.

Happened to me today....bid on 3 tile roofs on the same street, all 3 were neighbors. Got 2 of the jobs but the 3rd said they found someone to do for much less and that included washing their whole house.

So today we were scheduled to clean the other 2, and guess who was on the 3rd house lol...some guy with HD pressure washer in the back of his astro van. I just chuckled to my employee and said lets show em how its done :)

we arrive at 9:30, had the first roof done by 10:45 - 11, moved over to the next, other company was still blasting away on a side of the roof...we moved on to the next. When i was on the last side of the roof on the 2nd house I could see the other guy leaning against his van with the look of amazement on his face as we finished up the 2nd house.

we were out by 1, washed both tile roofs and paver driveways..... and beat the rain :)
