How crazy are you?

For the right price I would.

Is that ladder permanently attached to the inside of the duct? Does that meet code? And is that just paper that is stuck to it.

We have cleaned several 5 story stacks. Use our spinner, works great.

The ladder is permanently attached. Not sure if it meets code or not. Those are the paper hats that the cooks wear, I also found a ballcap from the company that was doing the exhaust system maintenance before, nice strong fan! Not exactly sure how we are going to handle it yet. The duct is about 4'x4' so I think we are just going to have to climb that puppy, scrape it out then wash it. I'll get some good pictures for the Delco picture contest doing that, eh?

heck ya I'd climb it ......I like doing the stuff no one else will
we have a 75' long duct thats 16"X24" and we hand scraped that whole puppy... Dave, I think thats a scrap by hand job maybe a spinner on the 2nd in.... but not the 1st
How long do you think it'll take ya'll to scrap it? can you put a solid 8hrs in it or will you have to break it up over a couple trips?

go for it I'd like to see a pic o the finished job... bet it'll be nice

Just curious, How much would you guys charge to clean this duct?

Confined Space

Be careful if you are planning on entering this duct. This is definately a confined space and you and anyone who enters it should be trained in confined space entry. If not you may end up with some liability issue and definately OSHA violations.

Good Luck

Permit - required confined spaces
1910.146 (B 5)
"Non- permit confined space" means a confined space that does not contain or, with respect to atmospheric hazards, have the potential to contain any hazard capable of causing serious physiacal harm.
if I read it right "WITH RESPECT TO ATMOSPERIC HAZARDS"
would mean an atmosphere with less than 19.5% oxygen by volume (in this case)

Permit-required confined space (permit space)"
means a confined space that has one or more of the following characteristics;

(1) Contains or has the potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere

(2) Contains a material that has the potential for engulfing an entrant

(3) Has an internal configuration such that an entrant could be trapped or asphyxiated by inwardly converging walls or by a floor which slopes downward and tappers to a smaller cross section

(4) Containing any other recognized serious saftey or health hazard

the only thing here I believe could come into argument would be (4) and in that casse i believe a body harness attached to the ladder with a fall arrest lanyard would probally suffice

If air movment is an issue a small fan could be used to move the air (c)(5)(i)(b), (c)(5)(ii), (E)(3)

I would most definatley post an Attendant
(i)(4), (i)(5), (i)(6), (d)(6)

this is just my opinion, dont get me wrong i'm not saying throw caution to the wind or to take a devil may care attitude, be safe and take precautions,I do agree that it would be a confine space but I dont think it would be a "permit reqiured" confined space but at times osha can make it almost impossible at times to meet the guidelines

very good information-thanks-should make Matt happy!

Another part that I forgot to look at, Atmosperic hazards (with less than 19.5% oxygen by volume)... My question is there a formula on figuring out the volume of oxygen or is this just a Professional call... These are areas that a new person like myself do not have any Idea, Not like I would attempt anything like this at this point...

Hats off to M.Hinderliter and Richard for making me think some more about this subject...
Hats off to those who would clean this exhaust system...

Thank you

Matt
