Has any one ever used a north star hot water washer? i was thinking about getting one for a back up. Are they ok or are they a POS.

They are Ok machines, but they have weaknesses. They are direct drive so long term use the pumps get beat up. The fit and finish on them are pretty good and they use decent components.
Thier service on repairs if you go thru thier warranty is not so good and that comes from a associate who had a terrible time with them on repairs. If you depend on the machine day in day out it sitting in a regional repair facility for 2-3 weeks is not going to put money on your table. On the flip side the machines themselves are easy to work on yourself.
If this is a back up unit and you are comfortable with it it might be worth your money.

I hate it when my back up machine goes down. It never happens at a good time!!!
I would consider buying a great machine from Russ here on the board, perhaps even slightly better specs than the one you currently have, and make you're older one your new back up. Give it a major over haul and learn a few things in the process, then it should be ready as a back up, or any sudden expansion plans that might come your way!
That is, if cash permits!
