Honda 24hp blown

Hi Bears..run into same thing down this way. Seems sometimes though it is just that places will have the dummies up front and the knowledge out back.

btw.. how's Central Point? Got relatives up that way. Ever known any Kings up there?
The rain here is killing me. I do alot of car dealerships so the rain hurts my biz. I used to know a mike king. He was in a wheel chair.

I had an issue with my Honda once.I googled Honda and called the local repair shop that was listed on the Honda page. The guy told me they didn't like doing Honda work because it was to hard to get their money out of them.I think this may be why you are having to hedge the bet for the dealer if Honda doesn't pay up at least they have your money.

The issue with the dealer not wanting to fix it because he didn't sell it to you happens alot. The only dealer that has to fix your warranty problems is the one you bought it from.I went through this with Dodge once. The dealers have a negoitiated rate with the factory that is their deal. whether they accept the work is up to the shop owner.Good luck.

By the way the local guy I called did actually fix my problem and he didn't charge me for it.He now has a customer for life.

At the Hotsy dealer they had a couple Honda Briggs engines go out and the factory wanted the engines shipped back to them for investigation.

One guy had used a generic oil filter on the Briggs and the pressure difference is what supposedly caused the engine to throw a rod. The guy had to pay for another engine.

The Honda, I am not sure of what happened there but the factory tore it apart and told them that it was from not doing the required maintenance and they sent pictures back to the dealer of what they found and proved it was not being maintained and would not pay for the engine.

I get the impression that those factories don't want to pay for anything but they have the technology to see exactly what happened.

Good Luck Chris.

All small engine manufacturers are incredibly competitive. Unfortunately they have also been caught on more than one occasion with people that have destroyed an engine and so they are all really crappy about warranty issues, especially with major repairs and replacements. The distributor, if he warranties an engine will often get stuck with the cost by the manufacturer.

Small Engine Warranty claims are my part-time gig at our family owned small engine shop so I know how manufacturers work.
As far as Honda goes the dist. warranties thru them and sends a new motor to them (vendor) pending verification of the failed unit IF it is questionable. This usually isn't typical though. The relationship between the dist. & manu. is the real issue here. If this happened at our shop, we would have our chief mechanic check out the failure and determine the root cause. If the cause is easily defined as a part failure (spring, valve, etc) then we call our rep. and tell him what we found on the unit. He then would order another one from the manu. to be shipped to us for the customer. Then we file an online warranty, sending model, serial, number, original date of purchase & alot more info. to receive payment for diagnostic testing of the unit.

The only things that would raise suspicions are potentially warranty voiding violations such as aftermarket parts installed, low-oil shut offs disconnected, and things of that nature if the shop checking out the unit has a good working relationship with the manu.

The most important and ONLY thing the customer has to do is have a valid warranty! Once this is proved, Honda is obligated to replace the unit. A unit being called for by the manu. is between them & the dist. If unit is warrantied and the dist. has another unit in stock to give the customer, Honda will send them one to replace the in stock unit.

DO NOT GIVE THEM ANYTHING!!! These are not practices of true small engine professionals.

Today a new engine was put onto the skid. Honda wanted the repair shop to install the engine and was willing to pay for this as well. The old engine is on the way back to Honda and will be looked over by their teams to see just went wrong and why. I will update this again as soon as the distributor lets us know if they warrantied the machine or what. The local shop had me leave a check for the amount of 1_-_.95 that covered the installation labor and the cost of this machine. I will leave those figures out of this thread to protect the prices that some dealers pay for these machines.

Put a stop payment on the check. Costs about $20.00 bucks and would keep you from getting taken. You will also know if he tries to cash it.

Really:confused: I cannot freakin' believe this!

If Honda is "willing to" pay the install cost from the SUPOSIDLY authorized service center, then Honda has alredy considered it to be a valid warranty claim. You watch, you'll hear the unit wasn't warrantied for some b.s. reason & your check gets cashed. I HOPE I"M WRONG!

Let me clarify this: Honda is responsible for the payment to the service center(repair shop) for any installation or repair cost that is incurred on a valid warranty claim NOT THE CUSTOMER. It really pisses me off that people operate service centers this way and manufacturers don't pull their certifications.

I'd do same...as then it would become a tell the story to the judge situation which would likely not even happen if the vendor is not on the up and up.

Everything worked out well on this. I have faith in Honda now and will continue to purchase products with their engines. Got a call the other day stating that Honda did warranty the engine and also paid the 100 labor fee for reinstalling the motor onto the skid and re-aligning the pullies.

Well I hate to bring up this old thread but seems the same thing happened again today 150 miles from the house.

I checked the oil this morning before starting, and stopped to talk to a manager for a few minutes and it sounds like she threw a rod. this is on the replacement engine. I will pick up another engine tomorrow morning and then well see if they will warranty this blown replacement engine or not. I highly doubt they will cover it but just in case Ill have it checket out to see

My experience, in a less politically correct way than the previous post, is that the Honda Warranty program, for me, involves me opening my check book and paying for it. I don't think I have ever had them warranty something without a fight. Like the time I had a brand new motor, first day out of the box, that totally melted inside within 5 minutes of start up. They did not, and could not figure out what happened, but they knew it was my fault. I love Kohler's

I think maybe you are to try a Briggs or Kohler or something... You know that concrete cleaning plays murder on those Aluminum can motors...((( I mean Honda's ))) I replaced my 13 hp on the whitco twice due to a thrown rod and My Buddy Tu Replaced his 3 times in 5 years on his whitco.. Are you still dealing with ((( YOU KNOW WHO } in Florence

Honda used to have really good small engines for lawn mowers, air compressors, ect. I've always been told to stay away from their V-twin motors though.

The Kohler would be my first choice, if I was pinching pennies then I would go with the Vanguard.

I have thousands of hours on all my 24hp Hondas and never a problem? I blew out a key-way once and that was because they had to replace the gear drive and screwed up the new install. I owned a 18 hp Kohler once and I hated it always gave me trouble, I do service on the engines every 50hr's and service the pumps and gear drives every 100hr's.
