Great Balls O' Fire!

After a search, I realize I am not the first to have this problem, but I couldn't find where someone posted the solution...

OK...Wayne burner, 3000 psi, 8 gpm HydroTek. Gray smoke, then it sounds/looks like my rig has an afterburner! (Kind of cool, but yet not.) Temp is set to 125 to 150, running either the wand or surface cleaner at 3000 psi. Sometimes, it will cycle on/off normally, but usually I have to keep an eye for the gray smoke. If I release the trigger, smoke stops. I can immediately restart and operation is normal, with burner lighting-off properly - until the next cycle.

When downstreaming, this never happens. Everything that can be cleaned/adjusted has been. Pressure, as I recall, is 150 psi. Flow-type unloader was recently replaced.

Any thoughts?

When was your last burner tune up? Could be dirt in the fuel nozzle causing the spray pattern to be off or misadjusted electrodes.

I had it tuned-up right after it started. It didn't make a difference. Since it only does it when under pressure, could it be either the pressure switch or the unloader?

Since lots of systems are wired a bit wimpy for turning on an ignitor,
bad connections inside the control switches are suspect too.
Your symptoms suggest possible voltage-drop,
..so make sure voltage is the same (under load), that is, while running.
A temp control with bad contacts could be limiting voltage to the ignitor.
Jumper-across the switches is the easiest way to check 'em.

Also, be aware that some reed switches in those Flow Switches are rated for less current than others.. You could have installed a mistake?
ALL 12 volt heaters should have the right relay turning on the ignitor.
CALL me for details.

The ignitor needs replaced.

John,
Call Ian Voight and have him put you in touch with the Landa guy there in VA beach that guy knows his stuff.

Yeah, its the Landa Guy (Lee) that's stumped. Lee has kept me working for almost 10 years.

A little more info: The unit is 5 years old with somewhere between 4000 and 5000 hours. (Really!) I had the burner (800,000 btu) serviced two years ago. Other than the occaisional seal for the pump, I've had no problems. Other than this problem, everything works fine.

Have you figured this out yet?

We were having a similar problem and took the burner apart for testing. We replaced a lot of components with little luck. Finally we adjusted the blower vents. The airflow adjustment really made the difference for us.
Now, if we turn the heater on while all switches are engaged, we can flood the system and get the smoke. In that case, we just have to let the blower run (just a second) without the flow sensor engaged (it allows enough air to get in for ignition).
We also get the smoke when the diesel tank is near empty. Just incomplete combustion I guess.
Playing that that ignitor is a very sobering experience!

replace water seperator and filter. mine just did that and it was some loose belts on the gen. and the tank had bad disel in it.(water) My belts had become loose and low voltage was not burning the fule properly

I feel your pain friend, have an old smokey myself.

My Landa has done that is the past, all I do is mess with the temp guage and it fires back up. I think the temp guage it is broken? But I am not sure is it from disel fuel dumping into the chamber causing all that black and grey smoke?
