Getting Paid!

I never saw this coming. I recieved my first draw without ever asking for it. I never got a chance to mail the first invoice, but I was given a check. I was asked if I was ready for the second draw before I was half way through the job. I couldn't believe it. Usually I have to fax an invoice and wait close to 30 days. I really thought this was going to be a great contractor to work for.

Call every single day or just show up sometime. Eventually he will get sick of the phone ringing and you'll find out what's going on.

I can't say I have ever heard of great painter/builder relationship and your story sounds like all the rest. Your paid just enough to be kept on the job then your left out to hang for 9k.

I have done work for builders over the years, and ultimately, it always ends with a headache...good luck Chris

you could always go the builders lien route, but if you threaten to do that, you had better follow through. some states have laws against undue stress and harassment. you could also try the collection agency. don't know much about it. i'm sure some one out there can enlighten us. i imagine that they take a percentage of what ever they collect. also could go on someones credit report. only thing is once you have gone either route, client-provider relationship is in the crapper. then again who wants to deal with a piece of crap who doesn't pay what they owe?

Building contractors have almost the same morals ( or lack of ) that Restaurant owners do ( I do KEC work) .
If you want the truth go to him and tell him you know times are tight things are bad and just want the truth about what is going on. You will then have the truth and know you are probably not going to get paid.
If you file the paperwork to begin a civil collection you will not know the truth till you get to court and you might get paid.

Hire yourself a collection company that works on a flat fee of $9 for standard collections.

The one I use is fairly cheap unless we turn someone over to second phase, then it's considerably more but at that point we probably wouldn't have gotten the money anyway. Usually just having a collection company contact them during the first phase works 75% of the time.
