A Korean barbecue went up in smoke on south Granville around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, but there were no injuries.

Heavy smoke could be seen coming from Shabusen on 14th and Granville. The fire is believed to have started from a buildup of grease in a ventilation duct.

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which, by the time they arrived, had licked its way up to the roof.

A Vancouver Fire Department spokesman said the restaurant should be able to reopen as soon as it is deemed fit for operation by a food inspector.

How many of these fires have to happen, before people start taking KEC more seriously?

Couple more people need to die I guess. Can not believe they will shut them down in a heartbeat for bugs running around but who cares if the place might catch on fire. Seems to me that we need a different approach like maybe if we tell them that if the system is not cleaned proprely that it emits toxic smoke that might make people sick:rolleyes: dh

All this time, I thought we needed to rally the insurance companies to force change. I guess I never realized the power of the tree-huggers. You may be on to something Daniel!

Its going to be required by your insurance company. the employees of many of these companys are getting KEC certified and trained to know what to look for so they can get insurance discounts.

I have already been reporting to a couple insurance companies, for a few years now, that require their insured to maintain their systems. They require that I send them a copy of the invoice, along with a service report noting deficiencies, and a copy of my insurance binder. These select companies are getting proactive about KEC, which is what the industry needs.

I have been saying for a long time, that it will take the support of the insurance industry, to make big changes in the KEC industry. It was the insurance industry that pushed for safer automobiles, seatbelt laws, motorcycle helmet laws, and so on. I just cannot believe that the insurance industry hasn't taken a more proactive role in KEC yet, these fires are happening all too often and creating far too many claims.
