I realize that a helper would have helped (that's why my wife went), but it was the only job for the day, and $800 for a roof cleaning was a pretty good day. She's got plantar fascitis (sp?) which basically means that her feet feel like a hammer is hitting them everytime she steps. So she was more there for moral support.

Now as far as filters, this is a type II hood over a steam kettle and a baking oven. As far as I'm concerned, it should be converted to a Type I hood, but the restaurant isn't going to spend $20,000 to retro-fit a hood that's been working just fine for 20 years.

A hired helper would have cost me time (to find someone on short notice), money (obvisously he's want to get paid-- and of course he wouldn't want to wait 30 days like I have to), liability (having to make sure he didn't fall off of the roof), transportation (I'd probably have to pick them up from somewhere and drive to/from the site). Now add up the costs of an employee (not just how much money I hand him) and my $800 shrinks down.

What would have saved me the most time is to have the right equipment, that is a larger wet-vac. Could have shaved about 3 or 4 hours off. I normally don't do these kind of roof cleanings, so I don't have the need for a nice large wet-vac, but the money was right. I checked into renting one, but they don't rent wet-vacs in my area.

But what I did do, is I turned a $350 hood cleaning into a $1150 job.

Below are before/after pics of this type II hood as well as pics of the stove pipe ductwork.

Turn a type I into a type II would not cost $20k! In fact there is no known reason to do so. But after looking at your pictures, are you sure that you are not dealing with a type II already. There is no filter bank, no plenum, and it looks like snap together ducting that is in all probability not grease tight. There is no fire system and I see what appears to be a dishwashers nozzle hose.

50 lashes with a wet noodle for you!

Accepted. Although the smells in my kitchen sound better than wet noodles.

Fried Okra, Purple Hull Peas, Red Beans & Rice & Eggplant Parmesean (modified by my wife).

All I need is some corn bread, but I'm out of corn meal... so I'll have to do without.

you'r right Grant, that is a type II, s-lock seams on the duct, silde together duct, no filters, no provision for filters, no fire system. What you take to be a dish washer hose is problably a hose used to fill a soup pot. This is probably a type II used as a typeI.

Rust, how did you clean the duct w/o getting water on the ceiling?

OK, Rusty gets whipped w/a noodle, but it has to be a greasy one.

Now the other OCharley's that I cleaned had a Type II hood disguised as a Type I. It had traditional baffle filters, but no piping and no fire suppressant system. Just duct work that was continuously welded up to a UL Listed upblast fan. No hinges of course.

This is a typical hidden system that most fire inspectors, unless trained to look for it, would easily overlook.

There could conceivably be a fire in the oven (they cook bacon) and the fire would then go up inside of the hood. At least there are baffle filters, but with no fire suppression system, the fire would not be contained.

See pics below.

1st one is the hood, 2nd one is looking up the duct, 3rd one is looking down and 4th is finished.

How did this go from "we need a hood cleaners only board" to lets pat russ on the back.?
Your suckers hes pulled you in to!

Let it go. Its over!

Same old stuff . Does that mean I can post all kinds of stuff here about how I'm starting my own training program for hood cleaners or would that not be acceptable?
You have chosen your side of the fence.

You can start a training program, and you can post about it in the appropriate forum. Actually I encourage you to do it. I don't see any fences, and therefore I cannot be on a particular side. My points are only that it is time that we act like adults. Name calling should be left on the school yard. Rusty has denied any knowledge of Kyle. And no one can prove any different. I think you are paranoid about losing business to a graduate of Rusty's school. Perhaps you should expend your energy at building your customer base thus limiting any competetor from finding a wealth of customers in your backyard. Spouting babble here will not help you keep your customers, it will not build your business and it lowers your reputation amongst your peers.

Was it in the "Art Of War"-"always keep your friends close and your enemy closer". Not that Rusty is a enemy-then again we don't exchange gifts of any kind. He does bring a certain spring to the bb, and he does for better or worse present a issue side the isn't widely viewed by most cleaners.

So Matt, Are we close or what?

Back to the question...
Would you like to see an exhaust cleaner only BBS in the same format as this, with the same original rules as this board started with?

"You have chosen your side of the fence my friend."
cleary- without question I know where you stand.

Start a program-can I ramble on contineuosly about my traing program?
Rusty would deny the sky was blue if he could get away with it.
I wonder does he support this board? Monatarily? You know $$$$

Ok russ so who is this K-man with in question? Have you had any retuns on your request for him to contact you?Or is this kust another form of harrasment?

Spouting babble by the male RN is ok?
Thus your choosing your side of the fence.

My reputation is intact. You seem to helping him in his quest to downplay what he has done as ok.
what a dirtbag.

Believe what you want MTNGOAT but you really don't have a clue where I stand. I don't choose to choose a side of the fence on YOUR issue with Rusty. But, I do believe that you are being very overly defensive. I also believe that someone maybe egging you on and it might not be Rusty. That is the trouble with these boards, you can pretend to be whoever you want, and there is always someone that will believe you.
No I don't think Rusty is right with all of his methods, but I do read them with interest.

Now this is an active thread. Just a couple of hours short of a week with over 100 posts and nearly a thousand views!

Just push someones buttons and all heck breaks loose!

Dear Mtn,

The purpose of CHDCA is to join all like minded hood cleaners together so that we don't step on each other's toes. All members of our association work together. That's why if Kyle was a member of ours and you were a member of ours, you would be working together instead of paranoia.

I don't know Kyle. I do know a Kevin from VT, but we've never trained him.

Maybe it's someone planning on coming through our program; they just haven't bothered to contact me yet. Remember that I charge to train people and I would remember someone handing me their hard earned money for us to train them.

As far as people posting after your posts, after all this is a bulletin board, open to the public encouraging people to post after each other.

If people can't post after you say something, then the conversation dies.

So, you say something, I say something. It's not a contest to see who has the last word. And if someone says something after you, it's OK. Just post something else.

As far as Delco's board, I have re-read the post several times, and as best as I can tell Kyle is looking for help, not trying to cut you out of business.

I doubt, if any one of your customers reads this board, or for that matter future customers who might use you, read this board. And since you don't use your real name or company, no body really cares.

Bulletin boards allow people to put on masks and be who they say they are. You have chosen to where a goat mask and others have chosen other masks. I don't know who Kyle is, but I can tell you that some bad jokes have been played before on people.

I can remember when Matt posted something on IKECA's board as if I had posted it and poor David about went nuts thinking that I had posted it. It was a practical joke.

Now if you will actually read the old posts from start to finish, you will see that the discussion of our training school was brought up and I was invited to defend what we were doing.

As far as Delco's sight, the owner told me to "piss off" and go get my own "f****** board!" So I did.

This thread's main point is should there be a hood cleaners only bulletin board, and I strongly agree that there should be. Agreeing with the point that was asked, I took it upon myself to do something about it.

It's like these stupid get young people to vote commercials sponsored by somebody. All these girls are standing in the bathroom commenting on how someone left the water running and that somebody should do something about it, one says call the maintenance guy, another says something else, then somebody walks in and turns the water off.

The point is, we can all stand around and talk about things, but sometimes you just have to jump in and get things done.

That's me in a nutshell. I don't stand around discussing how we should do this or how we should do that. I just do.

If I want the fire Marshall involved, I call him and talk with him. If I want the insurance company involved, I call the agent up on the phone.

If I want an association of independent hood cleaners, I do it.

I don't ask permission, I don't take a poll, or a survey, I evaluate the situation and determine the best path possible.

This unfortunately means that a lot of people don't understand me or why I do things the way I do. It also makes it appear as if I'm condescending, which I'm not. I just don't take the time sometimes to explain what I'm thinking and why I decided to do what I did.

That's why people that have taken the time to get to know me don't think that I'm that bad of a guy. I’m severely misunderstood, but good at heart.

Now... as far as the male nurse thing... where else can an 18 year old go to college and go to classes with nothing but beautiful women. Think about it.
