NEWMARKET -- A lunch-hour kitchen fire at the Asia Café brought firefighters from across the Seacoast on Tuesday, and they extinguished the blaze within minutes.

Newmarket Fire Chief Rick Malasky said the midday fire began in the restaurant kitchen and, when his department arrived, flames were coming through a vent out the back of the 108 Main St., restaurant. No one was injured or needed rescue.

Malasky said the blaze caused minor damage to a vacant second-floor apartment in the historic brick building, but firefighters did remove some walls to check for the extent of the flames. The cooking area of the restaurant suffered extensive damage.

"The guys did a good job knocking it down," Malasky said.

The chief said a grease fire in a wok exited outside of the oven's hood and into the ceiling.

He further said there was significant grease built up in the hood and fire suppressions system, which were working, could not contain the fire.

The owner of the building, Caroline Rogers, declined comment on the fire, saying she did not want to talk about it while insurance details are worked out. She did say the Fire Department did a great job and she was glad no one was injured.
