Engine shutting itself off.

My Pressure Pro with a GX390 and EZ4040G pump keeps shutting itself off. I just bought it from a guy who I met through PW forums, and this thing still has probably less than 200 hours on it. Plenty of gas and oil. It cranks right up, pressure starts low, builds gradually, and when I let go of the trigger, the engine shuts off. Any suggestions?

Does the engine instantly lock up after letting go of the trigger? If so, your unloader is bad.

Seems that way now. At first it would go a few minutes, but now it is as soon as I let go if the trigger.

Too much oil will shut it down

Too little oil will do the same

It may be an unloader issue if it only kills when you let off the trigger. However if it runs for a while and shuts down then you can restart it and run a min then it shuts down again...its your fuel cap. The new emission control caps have a carbon filter in them and if you fill up the tank too high the gas gets into the carbon and does not allow the air into the tank causing a vapor lock. Try loosening the cap and it should run fine. You may need a new cap but occasionally you can get lucky by removing the cap and letting it sit and dry out in the sun so the vent works properly again.

Thanks Paul. Been messing with it a little more today. It doesn't shut down as soon as I let go of the trigger anymore. Now it revs up and down for a couple minutes and then sputters out. Seems to work fine at half choke.

Holy crap. I just took the gas cap off, and this thing is running like a champ! Who would have thought a gas cap could make such a huge difference? The EPA drives me nuts.
