Employee Supervision

I was wondering what steps you take to supervise your employees. Do you feel it is successful? What challenges have you had? I'm looking for new ideas. Thanks in advance for your replies!!

Do you work next to your employees or are they off on there own? My biggest problem making sure they are at the work site and not going back to there house for a 2 hour lunch.

GPS tracking devices are distance accurate to about 6 feet and the clock is more accurate than any watch you own.
Do you provide cell phones to your crews? Many of them can track location also.

I follow them at night and keep my Crimson Trace Laser on them, seems to work well..

GPS tracking

A friend of mine who runs a heating and air company has installed GPS in all his work trucks. He can watch on his computer in his office where every truck is and how long they are there. It updates in real time so he can even watch them driving around on the map. Other than holding your employees hands that seems like the next best thing.

I have all the GPS and laptop latests but the best way to have employees that act like the owner is to empower them and pay them a salary.

My guys get the same pay for a 6 hr day or a 10 hr day because they are on salary.

I don't care how long they take to do a job because it costs me the same money no matter what.

They get a great salary, full health benifits, uniforms, vacation and paid holidays. In return they work their butts off and do outstanding work. The quality is as if I was there myself.

I frequently check jobs they've done by actual inspection or followup phone calls. The results are always the same, excellent.

In this buisness you get what you pay for as a customer and an employer.

Any low baller or new guy can get one or two jobs but his quality is never the same as ours and the customer, having watched our DVD, we gave them with the estimate knows it.

Anybody can spray water, goof off, wreck your truck, work drunk ect. Pay more give benifits and treat them like partners and you'll get much better results.

I have found that I constantly have to check on employees and follow up. I have tried to let them run on their own, and have often been disappointed. So, now I check on them, take pictures and retrain so that I can get close to perfection. I have come to the resolution that there is no way I can get employees to work like I do.

Everything we do is based on a daily production number, Of course we want to deliver the best PW we can.

We also require random photos and random inspections of our own techs work. We have often had to send someone back out for a customer service call.

I agree with Scotts statement, no matter what the employee will never be you.

For those of you that are using GPS tracking for employees, would you have one particular setup that you would recommend? One that I found (www.usacartracker.com) is claiming that you can have a satellite image of your truck available through the internet. Which one claims that it will track 6 feet of movement? That might be helpful when our guys pull up to wash the next groups of trucks. It would be easier to see if they're taking an extended "break". What kind of prices is everyone paying and what do you get with that?

Copy cat...that is exactly what I do and it seems to work the best. If they dont do the job correct go back and do it again. You make them clean some trucks 2 or 3 times in the cold or heat they will learn to do it right the first time. especially on Friday, or Saturday night.

I'd be interested to see how you do it. I think it must be very difficult in the fleet washing industry to pay out that way. I believe it would be impossible to pay per job since pieces washed per job changes constantly. Some day they have 25 pieces, other days 15. The employee would love that, while you would be getting paid for 10 less pieces. Do you pay per piece? If so, how do you know they are not doing a poor job of washing (rinse only?) just to get the numbers, or worse yet, just writing down numbers without washing anything? I have seen employees do that, say every other time or so, so when the customer gets around to paying the bill 30 days or so later, he can't tell from the invoice which time it was when his trucks were cleaned, so he pays it anyway and doesn't complain. And if you do pay per piece, that seems like a lot of work trying to calculate $ for the employees. Checking on each of the 200+ stops each weekend all over the metro area is also impossible, so that's why I'm interested if there is a better way. Right now it sounds like GPS is the way to go...
