Hell day it was. Start up problems gx690. Hearing the dunk dunk sound at start-up. Battery leads are getting very hot and sparking. Its getting 12v from battery + to maching ground, fuse is good.

Is the ground attached to the machine frame or the engine block?

reground to block front block right side under flywheel. removed solenoid cleaned up the contacts. goofed the install on the solenoid. How do I reattach the solenoid to the starter fork? Not sure if the fork catch assembly retracts then extends when energized? Applied power key off before realizing the solenoid and starter weren't in contact--- machine got power but up to the solenoid but couldn't engage - but the key was off. Also the solenoid got powered in the key off position. So the big thing now is the starter fork and solenoid seating properly then I can move on. From the original problems leads getting hot, sparking and dunk dunk sound have stopped but possibly still there. I'm thinking either a bad starter or kill switch, but I'm a crappy mechanic

Okay all set. After removing the solenoid I installed the ignition wire wrong on the solenoid. Cleaned everything up replaced cables, regrounded now she's running great. That was actually a good thing having to work on it . I made a couple jumper cables to bench test in the field. Thanks guys appreciate it
