Electric Reel Drag

I have a new Cox electric reel that will not unwind. Reel and motor work rolling in but there is a huge resistance to unrolling. Cox was about as helpful as a box of rocks. Anyone ever had a similar situation?
 
The chain isn't too tight is it? Is there a mechanical drag on it to keep it from unspooling that needs adjusting?

I have had it off and it is the motor, a steady kind of torquey resistance. The troubleshoot guide mentions high drag but indicates incorrect wiring on a 120v. Going to try and talk with the motor manufacturer. Will wait to open the motor.
 
I know if you spin a dc motor it is a generator, so could it be electrical where current is going through the motor? I'm thinking what you said Russ, tight bearing or something. I feel like the electric motor can be a jack-in-the box sometimes with stuff popping out when its taken apart so I want to go in with a plan if I open it.

I forgot to update - This was a big case of user error! Now it wasn't helped by Cox's manual which says drag can be caused by incorrect wiring - if it is 115v? Not being an electrician I just figured 'ok, not for 12v'. And the Cox policy that their reels and parts are warrantied from when THEY bought them, not when they were sold to you, is still ridiculous.

There was a series of things that kept me from getting an accurate assessment. But the problem was I had a big heavy duty solenoid - from a WINCH! Something that is definitely not supposed to free-spool!
