Direct Drive to Belt Driven

Was wondering if anybody had any info on whether a direct drive PW could be turned into a belt driven and costs associated. I picked up two brand new John Deere pw's with 13hp Honda's for $450.00. One direct drive pump is toast but the engine is a champ.

You may want to find out who services JD in your area. If it sold less than 1 year ago they may replace the pump under warranty. If they are the units sold at Lowes they go for around $450 used each around here. I think you'd spend more money swapping them over to belts than they are worth. Pump, frame, belts pulleys, unloader etc. Sounds like you bought a direct drive PW with a spare engine.

I had a DeWalt 4gpm portable for hard to get to areas and it went through 3 comet pumps in 3 months. All were fixed under warranty. Last time I had the pump replaced I sold it and added more hose to run from the PW's on the trailer.

I disagree, if you want an easy route to take, just get a new belt drive pump with a gear reducer. If you choose to belt drive it, even with the cost of a good AR pump, pulleys, belts, and frames, it would be cheaper than what a new belt drive machine cost. We make our own frames and pulleys arent expensive.

I too build my own but don't use gear drive. I buy my pulleys and colletts from Graingers. You may be right about it being cost effective. I just figured with 13hp it would limit you to about 4 gpm. Seems like most guys grow out of those pretty quickly. Danny if you go with pulleys I have a parts list for dual pulleys, collets and belts for General 2021 pumps to a CHonda type motors email me if you need it.

The one I built really works good. I think much more than 4gpm.

thanks for input guys - the pw's are new but sold as "repaired" at Lowe's.
Thought the'd be good back up's for $450.00 or something to tinker with and make better. Terry how's biz? I am origianlly from Heber Springs, AR.

A few years ago, I converted a 13/3500 direct drive Home Depot machine that used to be my everyday pw to gear drive. I found a Comet on eBay for less than $300 complete. I've been using it as a back-up since. The pump is rated at 5.5/3000 and with 13hp, it puts out 5.5 @ 2700 psi or so. It will run a Big guy quite well.

I've got one of those JD 4gpm units and although there is nothing in the paperwork about it I read somewhere that if you let it run for more than 4-6 min without pulling the trigger it kills the pump by 40% right then and there. You think they would put that warning on it somewhere. That replacment pump is 660.00 to order from Lowes. I bet you can find several of those with blown pumps around.

Heber? I went to high school there. Class of 99. Biz is kinda slow actually but about March of last year I knew things were planning to slow down so I tightened up, down to one employee now and he even works a second job. We just wash our regulars, nothing new since last June worth mentioning.

Here is a picture of the pw I built. This one is actually a Jain Dong elec. start 11hp. $250-$300. I built this unit and trailer when gas hit $4.00. I'm back to the big rig now.
