Devastation in Haiti - if you wish to help

After having been through several hurricanes (Rita and Ike), we on the Gulf Coast did not see any assistance from foreign countries helping us out. In fact, our own govt. responded very slowly not reaching some folks for 2 weeks. If it wasn't for the Salvation Army and other volunteer organizations, I do not know what some folks would have done. We are still not completely recovered yet. So i believe my money will be better suited for helping individuals and organizations in my community. That is strictly my opinion and beliefs. I will say it is a disaster in Haiti and I feel for what they are going through. I believe other countries should be better sufficient to handle their own problems instead of thinking the U.S will always come to their aid. As for me, I want my and our money to stay in The good ol' U S of A. Next, they will have a "help a foreign country tax" on top of the Soda Pop tax on top of all of the other ridiculous taxes we pay. This is my opinion. others may share or not share the same opinion.

I don't see this as political. The devastation was a natural disaster, and anyone in any country that faces a natural disaster should be helped, but then, that's me and the way I was raised. I have no problem with donating inside our borders, I have no problem spending inside our borders. I just can't turn my back on another human who is suffering. I guess you didn't see the photo of the little girl with a concrete wall crushing her from the waist down.

Take that in the spirit I intend it, I feed homeless stray animals too, and then take them to a no kill shelter for adoption. (One even became a family member)

Beth, After reading your response and my wife completely agreeing with you and chastising me for it, I must say that for some reason I did try to make this political. I was wrong in doing that. You are absolutely right!! People are suffering over there and we should not let politics or borders be a factor in deciding how they should be helped. I guess after seeing the devastation in my own communities, I failed to realize there are others who may be less fortunate. WOW! What a pompous a** I must have sounded like. That is definitely not how I am. In the private sector, we can choose to decide if we choose to give to charity or not. Thanks for making me realize that. I guess everyone has bad days every now and then. Today is mine.

It's ok Bobby. I know it's hard on everyone right now, the economy is off and the USA really does need to focus inside it's own borders. But when a disaster strikes, it's hard not to have compassion. Did you know that during WWI the brits and germans put down their guns on Christmas day, and celebrated together, despite being at war? (cease fire was issued and gladly obeyed) At times, we all have to put things aside and help.
