ok anybody build there own deckster? or recom some other equip for a small timer? just need to speed things up. using readyseal like most guys. ive been offering a 3 yr deck and a 5yr. on 5yr im using wolmans its thick and i like it we hand brush most of it on theyres gotta be easier way for thick stuff too right?! any tips are appreciated im doing great on deck work so far but still not comfy with it

Deckster

Deckster is ideal when you use RS, but not as good a pump for thicker liquids like Wolman's.

Many years ago when I used Wolman (before Decksters were built) we used home-made sprayers with Shur-Flo pumps. Problem was how frequently the pumps burned out. I started the search for a better pump when one new Shur-Flo went out after just three weeks. I was not happy.

Here's the bottom line: if you use it with thin liquids like RS or the new DRP sealers, I don't think there is a better sprayer made than a Deckster. Of course, I am prejudiced about it - as I make them. The first one ever built - more than ten years ago - is still in regular use today.

OK I found the post. I AM SCARED to death to put down stain with a shur-flo. I have Paul's hand held applicator and I am sure it would work fine, but the stain comes out so fast I freak out.

Steven I've got one of Pauls applicators to and I'm going to get another one from him that has around 1 gpm and around 40 or 50 psi. I'm working on a house that has wood siding on it the siding is so dark it looks black. I've done some decks and fences but I have never done nothing like this. But I was up front with the home owner that I have never done a job like this and they said no problem. I'm taking pics before during and I will take pics when I'm finished.

I feel the most effective way to apply stain is with an airless sprayer. Some will disagree but I started out as a cabinet maker 40 years ago specializing in spraying finishes. I met a Rep. of Ready Seal last year and told him I heard their product would not wok well with an airless sprayer. He said that was correct. I asked him how the wood doors at our office behind me looked with Ready Seal. His reply was great. I then told him I used a Titan 440i and the key was knowing which nozzles to use and how to adjust the pressure.

Smaller tip teejet 6502 best tip I use ...shurflo 4 life 4 ever...

ITs taking me way way way to long to do the spindles. I mean hours. I did a deck yesterday and it took me 9 hours from start to finish. sanding and staining. that's a total of 13 hours on the deck with washing it. before everyone laughs at that its just because I am not ready to spray the spindles yet with what I have. I need a more controllable. slower tip. I will look into the tee jet 6205.

Dude you need to spray or you will be out of business quick. or market your business for hand staining and charge accordingly. 13 hours to do a deck? hope you charged them $900! Just buy some disposable drop cloths a bunch of $2 clamps, clamp the drop cloth on the inside deck side, spray at an angle the left corner of the spindle in, work your way from left to right then do the reverse. You will have hit the outside edge twice. go fast, so you are not spraying too much. Then get a new drop cloth tack it to the outside and spray the one side facing in. Get an 8" or 6" inch stain pad and do next to the house, so you don't hit the house with overspray. Once you get the hang of it you should be able to stain/seal a deck in 2.5-3 hours. and why are you sanding the spindles? did you fur them up or use too much pressure. I used to use a scotch brite pad on them when they were still wet and do a quick rub. I sealed 7 decks in one day by myself, using the method I described. I was using Olympic Natural look protector plus by the way, which is the same consistency as ready seal and just as forgiving. For Wolman or Cabot I used an airless sprayer and never had a problem. I made my own sprayer with a 1.6 gpm, 45 psi shur flo. It lasted a year and a half before I needed a new one. The thing made me many thousands of dollars. Once you get the hang of spraying you will never go back.

If anyone asks you to do a two tone solid stain...run! That goes for stripping a solid also...run!

Dude your arms are huge. well at an average of $1200 per deck I can stain with a brush, but man when I get to spraying I will be making BILLIONS. why should I run from a two tone stain job? thanks for your words of advice.

Ralph is right on the money. If you are afraid of overspray or the job getting out of hand, bring a helper with a spray fan and have rags at the ready to deal with messes. Most of our deck work is on homes with solid-stain siding, so in a pinch it is easier to touch-up (as opposed to brick or vinyl).

The Titan 440i is a great unit, small and powerful, assuming your guys take care of it & clean it regularly and properly. Often we simply use garden sprayer for few jobs on the same day, then pitch it. The WoodSavers guy showed some pics of nicer jobs, those are tough to get here. Often I just sell two clear coats and not overpromise. High-end deck jobs are great, and can be quite profitable, but in these parts there aren't that many people that want to spend $10k on the deck.

If you can charge enough $ to stain by hand great but to save time spraying is the way to go!

Steven did you try lowering the pressure switch on your shurflo?

Shane, I DO NOT want to do these decks by hand at all. I am all for the spraying. That, for sure is the way to go and I understand that. I do not want to take any more time doing these decks than I have to. I want to blow them out in a couple of hours. I have my airless that I can use and then I have the shur-flo also. I have no issues knowing how to use the airless, I have used them a hundred times to apply latex. But from reading here and listening to the people that make sense I want to use what the pros use. it is just going to take time for me to make the adjustment to using it.

We hand stain all our decks...works great.

Are you serious Charlie?? I think you are bs'ing me. you have a deckster. Of course I use a 12 inch pad on a pole and use a 7 inch for the tops of rails and facias. I always sand the top rail, always. I want the customer to grab onto the hand rail. other than that I only sand what needs to be sanded. I don't sand spindles very often

Sanding is fine, but.... don't you notice the wood is a lot lighter where you sand? Especially on older decks. On the two tone decks. You really have to have patience, and I don't! And usually the customer wants the spindles one color, and the rail cap and fascia the other color...what a p.i.t.a.

My area is filled with 12 to 16 year old decks that most have never anything done to them. I mean some really nice wood too. My customer base is the over 55 crowd with no kids at home and they usually understand when I tell them that the deck will look great but it WILL NOT look brand new. That being said most of my decks get semi solids on them and I can hide a ton.

Spot sanding blows when you use a semi trans stain the deck should be be completely sanded IMO to look even but then you can't get enough oil to soak in to the wood.

What stains are you using now Ralph?
