Consulting Fees

I have a customer that has decided to go with a much cheaper company and has asked me to inspect the other guy’s work. They have several very complex grease exhaust systems.

We could easily spend several hours inspecting and documenting each system.

Has anyone done any consulting/inspections for a fee?

Dave - there is a couple ways of approaching this with no realy "right" answer.

I have done some consulting in the past in which my fee was between 30%-40% of the contract value.

Another way is to estimate the hours it will take to "inspect" and document. Add those up and mark that up by 15%-18%.

If you "ding" the contractor on the first inspection to the extend the customer wants him to rewash things...will you be expected to return and re-inspect? IF so, factor that in also.

Best of luck!

I was hired as a consultant in an unrelated field and billed at $100 hr + expenses, I estimated the hours and asked for a $2,000 retainer up front and got it. It was one of those jobs I didn't really want so I threw a big number at them and they said yes when can you start. Ended up being a good business relationship. I made money and they saved many times what I charged them.
