got a couple of customers wanting their roof cleaned soon. we are currently in the 40's to 50's here and i remember not having a lot of success in the past with cold weather roof cleaning. what could most of you say would be a minimum temperature that you would clean a roof with good results?

thanks all,

rando

Trying to Clean a Roof in those temps is a PITA. I've got the same problem right now. Gonna be in the 30's every morning this week and highs are only gonna be 50's and 60's. I thought we lived in FL. Burr.

Randy, what are you Cleaning? Tile Or Shingle? Shingle Roofs will Clean up better and faster in cold weather than Tile. Your gonna have to make your mix just a little stronger and give it time to work. Don't get impatient and start re-hitting it right away. It takes longer to start noticing a difference. If you can I would wait until it warms up a bit and the Surface Temp of the Roof can reach at least 60-65deg. I hope this helps a little.

I try to do roofs when they are above 60-65 degrees like Larry, the chemicals don't work that good when it is colder, they work but a lot slower.

The same thing with house washing.

I did a house wash, a small vinyl house and the temp outside was 48 degrees and instead of the job taking 30-45 minutes it took about 2 hours because the chemicals were not working fast, they were working but very, very slow.

This was our first real year in business and I have definatly noticed the same thing it takes a lot longer for the chems to work

shingle roofs

both roofs will be shingles. i feel like the time and maybe more chemicals needed to clean a roof this time of year could almost double the cost of doing it in the warmer weather. i'm hesitate about quoting a price at this time because i do not know what i am going to run into. it's possible that i could x-jet this roof and therefore use hot water but i have read that this also could break down my mix. my gut feeling at the moment is to try and convince the homeowners to wait until it warms up. my quotes may help them make up their minds.

thanks guys,

rando

I would try to convince them they will get better results if they wait for warmer temps. Around 60 degrees and up is much better and easier especially for you.

We do them in mid 40's but only with full sun to heat the shingles. It seems to help if we wait until the afternoon so the shingles warm up. Takes more mix and more touch up. Pretty much 1/2 days for roof cleaning during that time of the year. Kicking the mix up doesn't seem to help much.

I cleaned a shingle roof the other day. Temp was around 50. I just used warm water to mix with the shc. Worked like a charm.

Ditto, Can't be in too much of a hurry. You know it will take longer so prepare for it. Find out who has the freshest SH in town and when their next delivery is. Mix it hot. 60 or more % ratio of SH. It will get there, it just takes a little longer. If you are worried about your time just charge a little more. Upsell the driveway and clean that while you wait for the roof mix to work.
