Coil sooted up?

I have 2 Hydrotek SS skids. They have 12 volt burners and came with 2.25 fuel nozzles. The machine with more hours can only handle a 1.75 fuel nozzle. Any bigger and it wont burn clean. The other machine has a 2.25 nozzle and burns clean. I am assuming my coil is at least partially sooted up. Is there anything else that could be restricting airflow and cause these symptoms?

Fuel pressure can have a major impact. If the coil is sooted up the best thing to do would be to pull it and wash it to make sure you will get the best airflow when you readjust teh bands properly.

descaling the inside when there's soot outside..
is like brushing your teeth, because your hands are dirty.

..And descaling without a good reason can cause your coil to rust away prematurely.

once you get the heater to burn clean with the smalller nozzle.. run double-dosed Soot Remover.
Then, as the soot is cleared, you can go to teh larger fuel nozzle again,
and get a clean burn with the bigger fire.

Jerry, if they wanted to take the coil out and clean the soot off of it, what would you recommend on how to do this and what chemicals to clean the soot off the coil if they removed the coil?

Thanks.

Chems won't really help remove soot. Just a blast of water. Soot will not get wet, it just blows off. I've had decent luck removing the burner and using an air gun to blow the soot off. It makes a helluva mess.

Tony, there could be a couple of things going on. You say this machine is older. Maybe the motor is losing speed, causing less than ideal make up air. Could be the squirrel cage has a build up on it or it's not set properly close to the cone on the fuel pump side. Might be the burner gun is not properly positioned in the tube.

Thanks guys. I'm putting a bigger pump on it but I only need 110 degrees or so out of this machine so I may not really need to run a bigger nozzle. I will run the soot romover anyways and if I'mgetting enough heat I will probably leave it alone. If not I will look into pulling it out and washing it, as well as making sure everything else is in order.
