Chemical transfer hand pump

Does anybody make one that lasts? I'm talking about the ones for 55 gallon barrels. I've tried the ones meant to siphon, but that seems to stop working within a couple weeks, then you have to manually pump till the tube breaks. I've also tried the more expensive ones with the big blue discharge hose that transfers 28 oz per stroke, but they also just stop working pretty quickly. Mostly using for 12% sh.

Oh, and I've also tried shaker siphons but they stop working quick cause the brass gets corroded and the glass ball no longer functions. I'm trying to avoid 12v pumps and aod pumps for this. I want to keep it low tech.

Glad you posted that. I was going to try that shaker siphon. They have pumps at northern tool that says it holds up to harsh chemicals, but the last one I got said that too. I think I have tried the same ones as you and they all failed within a short period of time.

Try putting it on a rack or barrel dolly on its side and use a hose valve

On one of our trucks our 55 gallon barrel is strapped in and very tight. We end up transferring out of it 1 to 5 times a day, depending on what we are doing, so moving stuff, and unstrapping it to tip it everytime would be very annoying. And I don't think we can use a rack in that scenario. Has anyone tried the Pacer brand Ryton Glass reinforced hand pump? Its over $200 so that's a negative.

I would not carry a barrel of bleach on or in my trailer. If a accident occurs and it springs a leak it may cost you plenty to clean up.

I use a barrel stand where the barrel is unloaded from my truck and onto its side onto the barrel stand. Not really that hard to do,..even by myself. And with two people it's really easy. Use 5 gallon buckets to transport what you will need for the day,..and if you have a roof tank,... have it filled before leaving.

I made my own stand that is VERY sturdy,..but the main benefit of homemade is you can make it the the exact height of your truck or trailer. Also,..the barrel stand doesn't have to be the typical type you see with the "cradle". Just make what is essentially a table top and use a couple of wheel chocks on either side so it doesn't roll. I actually use a couple of homemade wooden chocks.

I used sawmill 2"x 4"s ,...they are actually 2"x 4" and are much sturdier that "store bought" 2"x 4"s. And cheaper.

* Although, I have considered buying a trailer just for hauling SH and letting it in the upright position and using an electric pump to transfer. I may do that someday, but right now the stand works fine.

**Unless you can get a hand pump that has seals that are specifically designed for SH and can handle it,..I wouldn't bother spending any money on one. Just buy the the electric. I think if I were to do the electric, I would put a " T " and PVC ball valves on it so I could rinse it after using it to transfer SH.

^Good point about rinsing. We always had a 5er filled with water and we'd just move our siphon hose to the water bucket and pull that water into our mix tank, essentially adding the first 5 gallons of water (which we would add anyways) Those transfer pumps would last forever. Don't rinse 3-4 times? They're toast.

12 v is the most practical. Never found a hand pump that lasted.

Totally agree with that Scott. We have used our roof systems to transfer bleach for years now. You don't need a roof system for transfer, just a 12v roof pump, suction-discharge lines & a battery.....Never found a hand pump that would hold up anywhere near as long as a 12v system.

I use those cheap red/white plastic drum pumps and they last a long time but if they are out in the sun, 2 weeks max as the sun breaks down the plastic hose and it splits in many places in those ribs. Too bad nobody sells the replacement hoses for them or something that will work in it's place.

Flush them out when done, keep them out of the sun and they will last, I have had some last a year in storage buildings.

Yep, had one with the cracks in the ribs. Sprayed SH directly in my eye one day. I actually taped it up and it worked. Then the pumper went bad. Gonna rig my 5800. I'm not using it anyway. Can I hook it up to the battery on my washer?
