I've been cleaning hoods on and off for 10 years.a buddy of mine worked for a company called prism and gave me 6 -5gal.pails of their hood and duct cleaner.after they ran out i have been trying this and that.the one problem i have is keeping chemical on to dwell plus finding a quality chemical.my local pressure washer store (cesco)sold me a powerful degreaser but to me it wasnt s*it.seems like basic oven cleaner(sod. hydrox.)from the dollar store works best
for 1 dollar a can and foams to stay in place.anyone have a good source for a quality product that actually works??

It all depends on how much you want to spend.

There are numerous chemicals from the cheap stuff, NaOH to expensive mixtures.

I know Derby Pressure Wash has a chem that they use that's pretty nice.

I've field tested it and it's very powerful, has a degree of dwell to it, foams up nice (if you have the right sprayer), is based on a 50% NaOH solution with other stuff added to stabilize it at lower temps, and surfactant added.

Overall, it's a little pricey, but it cleans very effective my for needs.

The ultimate chem that I would like to get my hands on 55 gallon drums is this new "Dawn Power Dissolver" that they sell. It's along the lines of a thin gel and it eats through crap like crazy.

The problem is that I've only been able to locate it in very small containers. I guess I'll call the company that distributes the product and see if I can get it in commercial size containers.

thanks for the info Rusty.are you serious about the Dawn stuff??Did a search and it looks like a pot and pan cleaner.have you used it on heavy duty stuff??

yeah it's a pot and pan cleaner. Just wish that I could buy it in huge vats. Probably as expensive as hell, but I've used it and it sticks where ever you spray it and it starts to disolve all of that stuff.

Rusty did you mix it with your regular cleaner to extend dwell time or use it as is out of the bottle?

I use it right out of the bottle. I want to locate a source for it in 55 gallon drums. As far as I'm concerned someone has finally made the perfect chemical. It's a thin gel with a high alkaline content and it sticks where ever you spray it.

I'm sure that they are the only ones to sell it and they probably only sell it in small containers.

I'll give them a call and see if I can convince them to use our network as a distribution method. It sure would give them exposure and increase their sales.

I buy a product from a company in Ohio called jell foam. It sticks like glue to all surfaces and saves me alot of time and money, if you would like the contact information just give me a call 740-819-2566 Bill Clough

jell foam

Bill , Is this a add on to your existing degreaser mix? What I mean is do you add it to your degreased or is it a stand alone product? What I have been looking for is a Thixotropic agent to add to the soap mix. Bonsai has it , but it is only available in liguid form and costly to ship. Still lookin.

aph111,

I have been playing around whith Caustic Soda beeds and dawn dish washing liquid. I do not have a perfected formula but the cost to make is half of what I was paying for V-501 from a local pressure washing retailer. Here is what I've been mixing up. Works OK on all kinds of grease.

5 gallons of water
4 cups Caustic Soda Beeds
1 cup Dawn Dish Washing Liquid
2 tbsp Corn Starch

Mix the corn starch with a small amount of water (3 tbsp) and stir together and set aside. After you have mixed the Caustic Soda Beeds, water and Dawn dish soap stir well while drizzling the cornstarch into the mix.

Spray on with Chapin sprayer.

Let me know if this works for you.

I'm sure I could improve on this receipe but it's not perfected and seems to work OK.

For a thick batch just add more corn starch while stirring untill desired thickness is reached. Becarefull how thick you make this stuff, you still need to apply it somehow.

By the way I was using your receipe untill I ran out of V-501 and had to buy some. V-501 @ 50lbs =$100.60 local pickup vs $45.00 per bag Caustic Soda Beeds local pickup.

As for the shelflife I let some sit in a pan soaking some tools for a couple of weeks and it maintained its gel like state.

I've been OK sorry about our Sept meeting I still owe you a lunch/dinner. It's just too tight right now. I appologise.

The forms I was going to send you, I haven't forgotten. I want to come up with some new forms. Those are a redundant b1tch to fillout.

David, Not a problem, dont let it worry ya. Ill be in Huntsville again in december. Added another building to the contract, maybe you could come out to work this time. Send me an email for more details.

by the way I think you posted in the wrong forum, were all Greasers here.

Harcross Chemical in Jackson Mississippi , 4 - 25lb bags of Caustic Bead... Enough to do 50 locations.. Total Cost $117.00.. Just a little over $2.00 a store for chemical.. This stuff Works great.. While it does not foam , if you mix it right it will eat grease up the minute it hits it , no waiting and no dwell time... Only thing is do not get it on alum.. it will eat it up...

On the bag it says 98% High Base Lye ( Sodium Hydroxide ) Mix ( Beaded )

This stuff is the Bomb .... Literally speaking....

Thanks for the plug Rusty. Ive been developing chemicals for our industry for about 15 years. I'd be happy to discuss, off line, any questions anyone might have.

One of my suppliers who deals with Rusty said Rusty has gone on to his next new venture. Something like multi-level marketing, he thought.

Bon voyage, mein Rusty.

How do you MLM Space shuttle mechanic school and certification? unless he is teaching people to train and certify more trainers and certifiers.
