Cedar Siding

Hello!

I am not sure if my last post made it through cyber pressurewash space , so here goes again.

I am still a newbie who has amassed some equiptment
(trailer, 230 gall. tank, c/w machine, x-jet, 24' extention wand, Landa Water jet, etc...)
I am so busy at my day job now that I can not devote the time to pressure washing that I would love to.Hopefully, next summer.

My question is this. I have the opportunity to pressure wash cedar siding on a 4000 s/f home. I have not seen it yet. The homeowner tells me that there is alot of mold, mildew and dirt buildup. He wants me to clean it. My approach without guidance is to use a housewash with bleach mixed in, apply it from the bottom up with the xjet and rinse from the top down with the 24' extention wand and regular wand. I am being emplyed to clean, not strip. Should I be using a cleaner/brightener such as used on a deck?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will return the favor soon.

Thanks John for your reply. I am assuming the house is stained or maybe even painted (the reason I said painted is because the homeowner said that he wants to have it repainted in the spring.
He may have meant stained).

The best thing for me to do is to ask the homeowner.
Thanks for the reply anyway.

If he plans to repaint in the spring, then you should hold off on the wash job until then.

if it were me

i would call Russ or Beth and get some EFC38 or make my own wash out of pre-carb bleach, tsp, soda ash,and a cup of Dawn.
Then apply with a foamer tip and exstension wand[if i needed it].
Then rinse with the x-jet.
Another option is JOMAX and bleach. Home depot, and i would still add TSP.

Scott,

If the house is painted or stained, then I would use a bleach-based cleaner - using as little pressure as possible. Cedar is a very soft wood and will scar easily, not to mention too much pressure will remove paint. Cedar siding manufacturers recommend against pressure washing, so be careful - especially with long extension poles.

i ment to use the exstension to apply the foam not to do the washing. Some foamers wont shoot chem very far.

I am going to see the house tomorrow. I talked to the home owner. He said that the cedar is painted. Would the foaming tip still apply in this case? I may advise that he wait until just before he is going to paint.

Chuck,

Thanks, I'll take you up on that phone call. I went to UNC-CH as an undergraduate. I love Chapel Hill.Matthews is a bedroom community outside of Charlotte.
