Can an exhaust system be fire safe if it not fully cleaned?

Can an exhaust system still be fire safe even if not cleaned according to NFPA 96?

Perhaps this will bring back some cool people from the past.
I am almost infamous for digging up old threads.
I read a LOT, especially OLD threads.
Often, I will get so excited and eager to "jump into the conversation" I forget where I am.
Hey, but often these old threads are priceless, just like old movies :)
 
Fire Safe ... Hmmm is anything really fire safe... Possibly water is fire safe.. As far as a vent hood .. Now as far as the vent hood I have never in 19 years seen a hood just burst into flames... Now it could be greasy and someone blaze up a steak on a grill , or maybe a thermostat on a fryer go out and cause a fire under the hood... .. Now I have heard of a fire system not working properly due to a grease problem in the vent hood... but to me that just sounds like the fire inspection did not take place as it should have.. Also I realize that I am a salesman .. I can only suggest a next cleaning date I can not enforce the cleaning law.. So this should mean the liability lies somewhere in the hands of the insurance company, fire inspector and restaurant owner..
 
John I think it is more up to the restaurant owner and the insurance company I talked to my local fire inspector she said that they only inspect when they get informed by by the company inspecting the fire system that is installed in the hood so bascaly it can go for years before the are clean but I can be wrong.
 
In the event of a fire:

My question is how liable are you if you didn't fully clean the system?
 
I honestly think you are more liable for a partial cleaning and a fire than a system you did not clean at all and has a fire.
Fire catches at a restaurant, you clean. They ask you in the insurance interrogatories if you cleaned it to bare metal or .002 thickness with a comb. You would look like a soon to be bankrupt fool saying ."I cleaned it all except the fan on the roof because it was too cold, but I gave him a break on the price." Or "I could not reach up in the plenum so we left that"

The other side would be no it was due 3 weeks prior and due to weather i could not clean it.... You are culpable more for partially cleaning it and leaving fuel rather than not cleaning it at all. Scary thing is there are 9 cleaners out there who think that is OK
 
Of course it can. What if there is a cup of grease in the fan and nothing else leading up to it. Oh I know the grease in the fan could spontaneously combust burning down the city of Chicago.

Please... This industry is full of people whom I will not name that perform shit work, and have lowball pricing. I was in an IHOP finishing an inspection recently when this wellknown scammer company called and wanted to schedule there "so called cleaning" which in fact is just a piss poor partial scrape job...the customer says to mr scammer "How much to clean all 3 systems?" the scammer says "$75.00 per flue" Mr Customer asked what does this cleaning consist of? does it include all the lateral ductwork on the roof? the intake and discharge of the fan? they said "ahh...no" Mr Customer said "well what does it include?" Scammer says "it includes all 3 flues".

Well you get the idea. :mad: This is what I believe Matt is trying to say without directly saying it. If your going to do KEC work, then do it properly. Like Jack grace said..."Clean is Clean"

In closing...These hacks have been around a long time, perpetuating this lie over and over on there customers. They were recently kicked off a job after finally getting caught ripping off one of their long time clients.

Just pitiful. IMHO

Why even waste your effort to "clean" that, just do the job right and be done with it.

It's not the first time they have been kicked off of a job. I know at least one place in LA that they are actually banned from. The worst part about these posers is they are certified which helps them look legitimate.

Well I for one plan on representing my certification with integrity. I despise people who practice business in this underhanded fashion! :mad: Especially when they act legit. I will be starting a chain of stores next week these jokers have been doing for the longest time. Before and after pics are now a requirement on ALL there jobs. A complete trail from the Hood all the way through the duct work to the intake and discharge on the fan.

I will personally have a great deal of satisfaction when these bozos are finally closed down once and for all. This is rigoshdammdiculos.

Do you doth have the same certification? If you do then you hurt yourself by advertising it. Customers will see that and think you are cleaning to the same standard.

Ya I understand what your saying. Matt and I are surrounded by companies who hold certs and do shit work. There is a company located not far from matt and I that does good work and they are certified. They are the only ones I know about. They are a pretty diversified group. ;). As for the rest of the Flue cleaners out here...they have little or no Pride in their work.

It's going to be very difficult to break the sterotype these hacks have perpetuated! However we are determinded to to change this, this shit has gone on long enough.

As most of you know NFPA Code states that the system shall be cleaned to .002 or 50 microns of and inch. Not cleaning the system in its entirety to this requirement may wind up leaving you with the bill in a fire. If it doenst end up as liability isssue it is a quality issue and i would recomend getting with it becuase your competitor will discover your weakness and take you strait to the cleaners. Real hood cleaners Represent!
