So I decided to mess around with some CH once again,..I used it years ago,..probably around 2004? I was always able to make it work,..more hassle than SH obviously but I used it to do alot of work back then,..and those roofs done with it in particular stayed clean for a longer time than roofs done with SH,..Not that it's that relevant,..just an observation. I think it may be due to Calcium Hypochlorites' ability to disinfect better? Just a loose guess though.
The issue with CH is two fold,..preparing it is messy and it is unstable once mixed and begins to degrade. There is a misconception though about it not being soluble,..Kinda' true,.but the part that dissolves is the only thing we need for cleaning. So in my opinion,..it is actually very soluble,.meaning,..when you mix it ,.the part that dissolves, actually dissolves easily,..it's the inert parts that don't EVER dissolve that seem to make it an insoluble product as a whole,..and I suppose it can be looked at that way,..but I look at it as that part that dissolves is the only part I'm concerned with,..you can mix it and aside from letting it settle a few minutes,..it is ready to use.
So I've learned recently that I wasn't ever using it strong enough,...I use to mix 1lb. per 5 gallon water,.which is actually weak. So,..learning this I decided to mix 3 Lbs. into 5 gallons water,..then I let it settle and pumped it out with a little transfer pump I made from a 1 GPM 12V pump. I pumped it through a funnel and paint strainer into a 1 gallon bottle for experimental use to be applied with a spot sprayer. So I now have a relatively "clean" batch of CH. I used it on a job Saturday to do some testing,..tested it on a painted wood deck that had serious black mold,.and it made it disappear quickly,..and then I tried it on some concrete with green algae,..and on this it was very effective as well.
Since I let most of the mess settle to the bottom of the bucket before pumping it out,..it didn't even leave a noticeable haze on the painted wood deck,..and the deck was an ugly blue.
There are always gonna be issues with Calcium Hypochlorite,And this isn't a thread to get anyone's hopes up on a powdered roof chemical. It is likely not as cost effective as SH .But I knew it would kill mold and algae and I thought I'd fool around with it again. I will be mixing larger batches for use in concrete cleaning and other uses for continued testing. Actually on concrete it is relatively fool proof,..lay it down and a run surface cleaner over it,.and no issues of hazing. One benefit is CH isn't as hard on vegetation as SH.
As I stated earlier and many times over the years, (for those of you who were around for the big debate around 2011 or so)
..I have used ALOT of CH over the course of a few years,..I know what it is and the negatives,..but I like having anything in my arsenal I can get.
