Hi All……I just called the city I live in (Here I So. Cal.) to obtain info on a business license and other info…they knew nothing else other than it will cost me $35.00…….What I need to know is will I have to get a business license in every city I work in? (House cleaning, Mobil Homes), I know I will need to take out a fictitious name filing, But for you guys here in So. Calif. There must be other permits I need Right? County or State perhaps? I Started a resale business years ago but this service industry is a whole new ball game...Well get back to me and Thanks in advance…….Jeff P

I think that varies from state to state, and maybe even county to county. I know that here in Florida, you have to be licensed in the city/county in which your business is based. If you run your business from your home, as I'm sure many of us do, that would be where your license needs to be. Best bet is to call the city/county government offices where you live and ask them, unless someone on here is in your area and already has the answer.

Here in So. Ca., Orange County at least, you can get just a business license for the city that you operate out of. You do not need a license for every city you "deliver" services to. If you run the business out of your home, you can get a home business permit. I know there is a more eloquent name for it, but it completely escapes me right now. But, they simply require that for zoning issues, you only use like your garage and no more than one bedroom in the home, or you would be violating the city's zoning ordinance. AND make sure that you check with the individual city about equipment. I avoided looking for homes in particular cities because they had restrictions on what could be stored in plain view from the street. Kind of a pain, but any of the cities zoning, or business permit offices should be able to help you with this. Hope this helps....

In Redlands it is called a "Home Occupation Permit".

It spells out a lot of do and don't things also.

Like you don't not allow customers to come to your home.
You do not any washing at your home, meaning of course the customers things.

There are several more items listed but each city has it's own restrictions.

Hey, thanks, Jon.... See, I knew there was a more eloquent name for it!
