Burner soot, smoke,heat loss,etc.

Tweaked with my older Hydrotek yesterday and put in a different fuel nozzle on the burner (went from 2.25 to a 2.5). Been reading some comments lately about super heat and oil emulsification so I wanted to test it out a little. With reduced flow and new nozzle I got 225 degrees out of the coil and I was pretty happy with the results on the gas station i cleaned last night. As I was ball valve rinsing some asphalt I realized I left the burner on and it was billowing black smoke. Today I start up the machine and I have a full blown smoke show for two hours, tons of soot from what I can see, and only able to achieve 125 degrees at full flow (175ish before). I think I drowned the coil and insulation in fuel. It was intermittently firing so I put the old 2.25 nozzle back on, new electrodes, checked for solid spark.....still billowing black smoke like crazy. I can see consistent flame, could the soot build-up be keeping my temp rise down 50 degrees? (only able to get 125 degrees)

Did you melt a hole in your baffle plate? This happened to me last year, and $600 later, I had new baffle plates, clean coils, and new insulation installed. Not fun, and definitely something I learned from..

Yup that "was" your baffle plate. It is supposed to be solid. I know I got hosed on that one, and believe me, I learned where not to go, but it is fixed now and I use the Red Devil liquid soot remover every time I gas up. You can make your own plate, but make sure it is out of Stainless...

When you installed the larger fuel nozzle, did you open the air bands to compensate for the increased flow? Wash the coil, weld on a new baffle, and adjust the burner.

Thanks everyone. I didnt adjust the air like a retard, slapped in the nozzle aand got all excited that I could get 225, then went and washed for 4hrs. Kinda screwed myself, needed to work last night - the weekend. I want to fix this right which requires ordering insulation...thats about 4-6days. Shitty.

We have it in stock and can get it out right away. Ground shipping is about 3 days I could send it from the AZ warehouse and should be about 2 days. there is always the next day air option but I gets pricey.

Oil stained concrete. Going off a few comments made by guys who do parking garages and their abilities to emulsify oils. Just wanted to test it out a little. Looking for a new 8+gpm and debating building a custom unit so I can reach higher heats. Testing the waters to see if its worth the hassle.

Well thanks to Paul from powerwashstore.com for a quick response and shipping time on some new insulation. Recieved it yesterday, this morning I plas' d out a 3/16 baffle and plug welded it in. Now the fun part, lifting the beast back onto the skid....

Out and cleaned up, waiting for insulation and gotta head to the steel yard for a baffle piece. Any reason I couldnt up the thickness on the baffle? The factory one is pretty thin.
