Forty firefighters tackled the fire at a restaurant in Brighton
Forty firefighters have put out a blaze which broke out at a restaurant in the Sussex city of Brighton.

The fire, which started just before 0700 BST, badly damaged the roof of the Master Mariner, at Brighton Marina.

Crews, using an aerial ladder to reach the seat of the flames, took just over an hour to put it out. No-one was inside the restaurant when it began.

Motorists using the A259 coast road were urged to drive carefully in the area and to be aware of smoke.

Tony Guff, from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: "This was a major fire.

"To start off with, it looked like the whole of the roof area was going to be lost, but the crews worked very hard and we've managed to keep it to only a small area of the roof.

"The kitchen area was very badly damaged by fire as well."
