Blue Beacon

I brought our Daycab Peterbilt and 45' aluminum walking floor trailer to the BLUE BEACON today (we do construction demolition),we usually wash it ourselves but I just felt like running it through and get on with the holiday weekend.I had them wash the tractor and trailer, and brighten the aluminum. There were three guys on each side, and they were done in 15 minutes, $103.50 and they missed alot of areas that I pointed out, they were not too thrilled to go over the many spots they missed."You're all done sir" "oh no were not" that went on about three times before I finally left. For $103.50 plus a tip I was going to make sure I did not get a rush job. What a business,I usually talk to the manager on duty and they all have roughly the same amount they come out with about $9000 to $10,000 a day(24 hour day) on good days.I wish I had the money to open one up!

$103.50  at the streakin beacon???
Here teh same wash would have cost about $70, of course depending on what sort of extra services that you asked for. If you had the aluminum brightened, it woud cost more.
as for the quality of the work, let me express my shock, oh my!

I had the aluminum brightened, and wash the engine which I forgot to mention, still 15 minutes and had to go over alot of missed spots.I guess it all works out,I know they earn their money when the cattle trailers go in there,or they have to do a wash out on a trailer that was hauling raw hides !!
nasty ,stuff.I usually wash the tractor and trailer myself, just felt lazy and wanted to see what was new at the beacon, had not been there in a year.

Ooh, bull wagons are ZERO fun. First you have to celan up the inside, and tehn you have to clean up the shop. Not a positive experience. I have never donea hide trailer, btu I bet they can be really nasty as well.

Jim,

It's funny, you mentioned the truck wash and wishing you could open one up because that's exactly what I'm doing right now.

For all these years I've always told my wife that if the opportunity ever presents itself to open a truck wash, we're going to do it. Well, recently the opportunity presented itself and I've moved on it. Things are just getting started but the grand opening is planned for August 15, 2004.

I'll get pictures and some more info as things progress. We are also going to have a website for the truck wash. It's a new adventure that we are all very excited about it.

Thats Great Justin!I wish you the best of luck.I have followed your posts for awhile, and with your knowledge of the industry, and your attention to detail I think you will do great.I have a location I have been looking at,next to a huge truck stop, and it has three big bays, that could fit a whole truck and trailer in each, and one bay is already set up as a washbay, and the place has been vacant for years, and it sits on 4 acres but the $400k price tag is a little bit out of my range right now,but the place would be a gold mine, with one bay for tires and minor repairs, one bay a lube and pm bay and of course one bay a wash bay.The truck stop was built after this place was closed, and it's right on a major highway.Maybe Someday.................
Best Of Luck!!

Jim,

Thanks! I'll tell you, this is going to be different ball game with this truck wash. I think it will be fun in a lot of ways. We're going to be doing some neat things like giving away coffee and popcorn and once in a while we'll have the grill out there and cook burgers for the drivers. I'm excited about it, that's for sure. At the same time, life as I currently know it is going to change and I'm sure I won't be able to golf as much anymore but I think I'm ready. I will be there and be active most of the time so I'm getting a refrigerator, microwave, maybe some sort of cot, tv, cable, computer. Basically everything I have to have to live there. I'll post pictures of the operation soon.

Sounds like the location you mentioned would be a nice one also. Maybe you could rent it while they are waiting to sell it. That would give you the opportunity to maybe purchase it down the road. Just a thought.

I'll update soon.

Hey Justin
I really have too many irons in the fire at the moment, and the financials are really not there on my own.I have a good friend with deep pockets, and could buy it tomorrow, but I really do not want to do the partner thing, and we have been contemplating moving to a warmer climate.I think you will do great, truckers have a hard job,and appreciate the personal touch and someone caring about the job they do on their truck.Don't forget to get a cb radio and advertise over it ,it does draw truckers in.There might be some type of rule about advertiseing over the cb,but it is never enforced and many independent truck washes do it.Put up some pictures when you are up and running, and again, the best of luck!!!

Justin

If I were you, Get yourself a billboard, put your daughters picture on it w/ some cute slogan, & you'll be building more bays & be a mucho millionaire! One other point I like is about firing up the grill on some days. Remember this, food wins a man's business. Get you a big ass grill, cause when there's food, they're coming to ya. Food is cheap, but it could also reap huge business for you. (Can you tell I like to eat?)

Thanks guys for all your ideas. Today I finalized the lease and purchase. Big step for me and it's one that includes putting all my eggs into this one basket and going for it. I'm excited about it alot. I'll post some pictures soon.

.... I had a nice post but this board is soooooo slow it's annoying.

Mike, do something. Change your host. There's a good one in columbus called jumpline.com. Wherever it is your servers are and have been for the past several years, they are slow. I don't think it's the images.

I had a nice long post but somehow it was lost when adding images. I spent some time on this too so I'm disappointed and I guess I'll post another time.
