I tried searching but couldn't come up with much. What is the best way to apply oil based wood stains? Hand brush and roll ? Cheap pump up sprayer and back brush? Deckster? Shur-flo and back brush? Just starting off so can't afford to spend $500-$800 for a setup. Love some input, and thanks in advance.

We hand apply to 90% of our decks using large block brushes. Fencing and homes are sprayed using low pressure shurflo setups. There really is a marketing/ sales advantage to finishing out a deck by hand if you approach it correctly (more $$$ - easy close).

The last deck we did we spayed with pump up sprayer then back brushed it. Seems like the pump sprayers put it on little thick though.

There's nothing wrong with spraying if you do proper prep. A lot of homeowners worry about it being all over everything. In many cases their concerns are justified as I see stain all over siding, concrete, brick and windows all of the time. A slight breeze can add a whole lot of clean up time to your day! Guys like Shane have it down to an art though :)

It might be easier to spray but A lot of people want it " worked in real good " by brush and that's fine by me. Though I could do it twice as fast spraying I can charge almost twice as much applying by brush. I have done small cabins in a day with brushes. The good stains like A/C and Ready Seal go on real easy.

Shurflo and back brush with a deck and siding brush or paint pad for smooth decks .

Sup Greg!

I'm still dealing with the wind with all the fences I have and thank god no more 4k' long fences coming up for now!

I once made a product called the Breeze Brush for just such an occassion.
Easy to make one for yourself.
No overspray at all in windy conditions.
applies quicker than a wand in most cases.

We all use sprayers for at least some projects but I have always used Chinese bristle brushes and sell the service over other applications. Forest Products Laboratory has always recommended brush application as the optimal method. I can tell you though that the person who used to run the Joint Coatinsg Committee used to make up his own sealer and put it on with a mop, true story!
