Yes, very interesting.

He underbid the job and once he cleaned it once, realized his mistake and then raised his price for the next cleaning only to have the customer balk at having to pay the fair price for the 2 stacks.

We call them price jumpers and they are about as loyal to you as democrats are to the republicans.

I'm sure that as soon as another company comes along and offers to clean this exhaust system for less they will jump from you (Karen) to the next company and unfortunately they'll be scraping your sticker off to place theirs and so the cycle will repeat till all of the hood cleaners in that area keep quoting a price that is fair for that job.

Cleaning a system after someone else didn't get the job back doesn't mean that all of the systems that were cleaned by your competitor aren't being cleaned; it just means that the system that you got back wasn't being cleaned to the satisfaction of the customer. The customer has the right to choose you or any other hood cleaner.

Now I'm not going to defend the actions of every member of our association. We are all individuals and have each been trained how to properly clean all accessible areas of a kitchen grease exhaust system to bare metal. We have stepped up to the plate and try to provide a high quality service for a fair price. Does that mean that every time we clean and that every customer will be happy? No. It just means that we learn from that experience and try to apply what we have learned to the next situation.

I'm glad to hear that you got this customer back. Maybe they have learned that price isn't everything and that quality of work far outshines any low price that they may have paid. It has also probably made you think more about the value of each customer and what you can do to keep them happy with your service. These are some of the values that we try to instill in the members of our association. Some pick up on this value quicker than others.

Russell,
I did not say anything about the quality of the previous company's cleaning at that location. Nor did I say it was a customer we lost and then got back. Failing to have a bid accepted isn't the same as losing a customer; you can't lose what you don't have.
As you point out, there are many factors that influence a customer's decision to use any particular company.

Any company can run into issues-even those that are on the cutting edge, so to speak. One of the single best tool is to require the company manager to make a Final Walk Though-so that they can see what the customer first reaction is. In fact, I even go to the extent of telling the employees to turn the lights off and reenter the store.

I have this on my condition report and has solved many issues. I would bet the LV cleaner left the store in a condition that created a reaction that was less than positive. This is for those who plan on starting schools and colleges that train our young and old to service the food service industry.

As an AHJ in Calgary Alberta Canada I am interested in how your state regulates the certification process.

As the AHJ I am working with cleaners encouraging them to become certified before it becomes mandatory in our new Fire Code scheduled for release late 2006 or early 2007. Within the City of Calgary I am getting a very positive response and support from the cleaners, restaurant owners and the suppression service industry.

The State Of Nevada has it's on test and regulations covering cleaning of Nevada systems. They only accept their program.

Yes our Guy in Las Vegas is certified by the CHDCA and yes we helped him pass the Nevada certification (which he passed with 100%).

I think Nevada is leading the way to implement certification across the nation.

Allways ask what problems they had with their last cleaning company when you get a "new" account. Makes them think "you care" and keys you in on what they consider important.
I just got a country club that has to spend several thousand dollars on a new roof because the old company did not feel they could clean the fan so they didn't...for 4 years.... ruining the roof.

Unless they have changed the test must be taken in Carson City and they require that your hood sticker meets their standard. The test is 50 easy questions that was written by a person who has never cleaned a hood. They have other requirements that make the process cumbersome.

"Certificacion??? No es necesario aqui !!! Yo solo tengo el "Sticker" de NFPA en mi van y eso es sufficiente."

As told to me by one of my competitors.:D

How easy is easy? Easy for a man of Mr. Saulque's proficiency may not be as easy for the average blow & go.

Is your information from someone with first hand experience, or grapevine education?

Ask your guy how easy the test was. I have not taken the test, I am going buy what I have been told-You best start thinking about our bet and my $5.00.-Be nice Josh-didn't nean to slander your group.

HEEHEHEHEHE...I have enjoyed no nasty emails and no nasty voice mails. Joke em if they can't take a f.....
