Anyone using inexpensive accounting software

For everything it offers QuickBooks Pro is definitely the way to go, regardless of size. Accountants love it as well - and a happy accountant is a better accountant :)

I use QuickBooks pro as well. It is the best thing on the market for those of us with minimal accounting experience. I would suggest you hire an accountant to do your initial setup. The reason being is that there are so many ways for you to mess up the accounts the government actually utilizes to track your income (expenses-revenue=income). I found my accountant thru CL and although I’ve out used his usefulness, he did do a decent job in setting my initial accounts to what the government is looking for. I just did my taxes for my first year in biz as a home inspector and the tax preparers were ecstatic at how easy it was to simply put in the numbers from a print out page of profit/loss from QuickBooks. Needless to say my college education taught me that the #1 reason small businesses' fail is because they have no clue of their expenses and what their jobs are costing them. I can go in today to QuickBooks and tell you how much mileage each job cost me, due to each gas receipt having a tag (customized).

I plan on starting a deck restoration/roof cleaning business here soon and I plan on having the exact same setup. It’s quite a relief to look down on a piece of paper and know exactly what it cost you in chemical to treat a roof-wash and seal a deck and or whatever, make adjustments as necessary. Long story short -no checks and balances lead to trouble.

By the way anyone know a spell check system for this thread that works with 64 bit? I just tried downloading the spell checker and it didnt work -Also how to I permanently attach a signature.

Yep. I use the online version. 40$ a month and all the upgrades included and quick telephone support. Thank you Tony Shelton

Nick, I agree with you about open source. The idea of buying software and installing it on one PC seems outdated to me. I have been using Wave. It is a free open source accounting platform. They did an update in Dec and I liked it better before they "improved" it but I still like it. I will check out your suggestion too. Thanks for sharing that.
