Anybody using Ubuntu?

Has anybody had any experience with Ubuntu or any other free Linux operating systems? We have 8 computers and everytime we have guests from out of town they always jump on the most convenient one and get some crap in it that we can't get out and I end up reinstalling windows.

Half the time I can't locate the original disks. I'm just sick of windows. Most of our stuff including accounting, spreadsheets, letters, etc are all online now with google and quickbooks. I'm debating on getting out of windows all together so I don't have to worry about all this virus crap and spyware.

I'm going to test it on one of the computers over the next few weeks.

Mac all the way. I run quickbooks and ms office off of it and works great. I spent some change on it but its worth every penny. Ive had it for about 4 years without a lick of problems.

Oh Man! I can't use a Mac! I'm a republican! (I guess I need to quit using Google too.) I just can't win!

Seriously I can't afford to switch over all the computers. Some of them are almost brand new.

Once you get past all the recycled boxing and environmentally safe styrofoam its not so bad.

I've used a lot of flavors of Linux.
Ubuntu works great. Right now I have an iMac and love it. QB runs on safari beta mode right now. QB will work in Linux but you need to install IE on the box.

I just found that out about qb not running on firefox. I rarely use IE anymore because it is so easily hijacked. I've been using google chrome for a while now but it has a few quirks too.

Tony here is something to think about

This is from the QB community site

Hi Chrome,

You are the 2nd request for the Google Chrome browser.

1st request is here

We've gotten Firefox, Safari and UBUNTU to access QBOE but I do not know anyone who uses Chrome. I use Firefox for WIN & UBUNTU and have posted fixes for those (Intuit finally fixed Firefox and Safari for MAC) so you two are the guinea pigs here. I'll be honest, Chrome is not a big request so I doubt that Intuit is going to invest any time on it.

I guess the first thing is can you access QBOE and if not what is the message you are getting.

Regards,
Ozzy

Looks like its a "mute" :jester: point anyway because I can't find a driver for the main printer for ubuntu. I installed it on a second drive so I can boot up to either of them and it works good. I haven't tried qb on the main computer yet. It didn't work on the first one we installed it on.

What is the printer that you have? Ubuntu, as good as it is, isn't as easy as Windows.

The network printer is a Canon Imageclass MF5550. I probably should upgrade, I've got over 120,000 pages on it and it's still going strong. Parts are falling off of it and I've got a paper clip holding down some of the switches, but it's a workhorse!

Geez - I'd say so, or at least wait until the band-aids fall off.

I use Kubuntu. It is the same as Ubuntu except with the KDE Desktop. I have 3 computers networked. Two with Kubuntu and the third with Win XP. I only use XP because some things I use for my other Job won't run on Kubuntu. Linux is good to use and free of virus and spyware. Most importantly it and all of its software are FREE. As in Free Beer!
