Another lost email thread

... oh man, 4 years worth of email lost this week.... or so I thought!!

Got a new 27-inch iMac last week (loving life right now!) and decided that I would change email settings because I want all delete/reply/forward, etc. email actions to be replicated across laptop, phones and ipad - changed from POP to IMAP settings using our unlimited godaddy email account.

For some reason it wiped all the messages on the godaddy server from before March 15, tech support were useless - even that is being complimentary to the idiots there.

With so many important attachments, contacts, communications and leads, I was ready to break something.

Long story short, I back up our computers to an external hard drive a couple of times a week and found the old files hidden away in the back-up archives... only problem is I can't seem to import them into the inbox on this latest version of OS X and have to search the archive files manually, which is a slow process.

Some advice to you guys/gals if you're not already doing it:

- Back up all your files
- Save email sender/recipient contact details in a separate contact management system
- Download and save all attachments
- Back up or archive email files before making any POP/IMAP changes.

... anyone else got any tips/advice on good systems or procedures to put into place in relation to this kind of thing?

Maybe Im missing something... but if you have an unlimited godaddy email account... why not just tell your mail retrieval program to leave a copy on the server.... that way it will always be there and when you start a new computer with a new system it will automatically d/l all those files as being from the server.

I've never seen an option like that in OS X Mail program - I did a bit of searching about and it appears that many people have had the same problem, the server has emails from March 15 onwards. I find this strange because I changed the settings on the 25th.... if it was to lose all emails, I'd have thought it would have done them from this date.

Anyway, sh*t happens... onwards and upwards!

Carbonite !

Good call Steven, having the backup is wonderful when you need it. Backup files, backup keys, backup parts....

I don't like carbonite - from what I have seen and dealt with, it's a resource hog. It's always on... taking away computing power from whatever programs youre running. It also backs up new files before it backs up changed files, so if you modify a file daily (like your sales records) it has to finish backing up any of your new files (like every song you download) before it works on any files that have changed.

If you want cloud storage, Ive heard good things about zoolz (https://www.zoolz.com/meet_zoolz?p=true) They have a personal version and a business version. If you want onsite/offsite storage on a mac, I believe you can set up time machine to automatically back up to a external every night. Since its an external, you can take it with you if youre worried about catastrophe (fire/flood etc...) From what I remember, time machine keeps track of accumulated changes - to give you everything. If you want to just sync important files among many computer try dropbox or bitcasa.

Funnily enough two things came across my newsfeeder today (I use pulse if anyone cares)

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2278661,00.asp? best backup software (for PCs) Of these, I use Acronis True Image a lot, especially because you can build your own recovery partition to load what you want loaded. If I ever have to reload windows on a clients machine, after I set it up just how I want it, I set up my own recovery partition so if i ever need to do it again, its a one touch restore. You can also make the image have all the files and programs on it as well.. so no more huge reload.

and this is the funny one
http://www.worldbackupday.com/ I had no idea world backup day was March 31. Back up your files more than once a year folks.. it's just good business.
