First off an introduction. My name is Roger Medbery. I’ve been cleaning vent hoods since Feb. My day job is with a major airline and we all know how they are doing.:( I have a brother in law in Dallas who cleans hoods, my wife (an accountant) does his taxes. When she showed me the stupid money he was making I decided this was a way for me to kick Delt..................err the major airline I work for in the kiester. I took a weeks vacation and worked for my BIL for a week to at least get an idea of what it takes. How many of you can say you go to clean vent hoods for vacation? I didn’t want to be the typical low baller, I wanted to do it right. I’m insured, bonded, have decent equipment, even bought a van off eBay. I’m up to 5 customers the last was a chinee place:eek: for $440, well maybe I am a lowballer! Ill never eat there again!

So, to the question. Do any of you offer any additional services? Mainly filter exchange? My bids have always included cleaning the filters, should it be an extra charge? Any other services? Fire protection? Flat work?

Oh and this post will put us 1 closer to tromping the silly flat workers!

For the most part how you set your customer services up is what you are going to have to live with from now on. To run a single truck you will need a mix of 120 accounts-some small some large. If you start out cleaning the filters those account will expect it. If you do their flat work, they will expect it as part of you standard bide. Create a menue of basic service-hoods, filters cleaning, filter sales, access doors, roof protection and chemical sales.

If you were to focus on the hood only your service time will improve so that you can make your second job. I would focus on obtaining the second job rather than doing the flatwork. In California we have discharge issues with flatwork that puts another issue into play.

Focus and specialize is the key for the long term.:)

Hello Roger,

David makes a good point to Focus and specialize.

I have focused on cleaning but have diversified on what we clean. Living in a rural area we don’t have a lot of any one thing to specialize in without traveling great distances.

Last week we started with a kitchen, then switched to flatwork (all nightwork). Later in the week we were working on graffiti removal and underground equipment at a local coalmine. We finished the week doing vehicle fleets.

Roger,
I would stick to the hood and duct cleaning for the time being. As you build clients you will see what sells in your area and what doesn't. If you see a market go for it, jsut don't let the base of your buisness ( hood and ducts) slip.

I guess you could try flat work But be aware it was explained to me only proper method of preforming flat work is to wear a skirt
